North Korea Threatens To Strike US Aircraft Carrier To Show 'Military's Force'
Fox News ^ | April 23, 2017

North Korea threatened Sunday to sink a U.S. aircraft carrier to demonstrate its military prowess as two Japanese navy ships joined a U.S. strike group for exercises in the Philippine Sea.

"Our revolutionary forces are combat-ready to sink a U.S. nuclear powered aircraft carrier with a single strike," according to North Korea's ruling Workers Party's newspaper, the Rodong Sinmum.

The paper also likened the USS Carl Vinson to a "gross animal" and said a strike on the carrier would be "an actual example to show our military's force."

A lot of Freepers think a one single hit form a missile with a 1000 pound warhead is going to sink a CVN. Like a CVN is some kind of fragile thing. Sure a missile strike could cripple a CVN an possibly send it into port for repairs but to sink a CVN outright takes massive damage.

Just say no to using ships for arty reefs. The steel is a national security resource. We import most of out steel these days from .....china. Thanks to enviro-wackos.

A few years back the Chinese surfaced a sub inside a carrier group,

Did you ever think the Navy knew about that sub? Do you think in peacetime we are going to reveal the fact that the PLAN sub in question was being tailed by one of our own ssn's? Have you ever been in the Navy? Do you now anything about ASW? Do you know the difference in the rules of engagement between peacetime and wartime? You can prevent a sub form surface in peace time.

If only....”Our beloved and revered leader Kim Jong-In has suffered a regrettable accident and we are sad to announce that he has died”.

Porky pig NEEDS to die to prevent the death of so many of his innocent country men in a bombing free for all, and better the lives of so many in NK now living in abject poverty.

“... or his own military is gonna bi*ch slap the creepy little snot silly.”

I was hopeful that this would happen until I heard a report from a Korea-watcher. He said that the executions of so many top commanders had made it so that any one of them who might think to do this fears trying to gain support from other commanders because he might get ratted out, and then he and his entire family will get lined up in front of the ant-aircraft firing squad.

Completely agree. These aren't WWII carriers, and even those could survive multiple hits. Hell, a WWII carrier survived a near nuclear hit (Operation Crossroad) and the another WWII carrier in the same operation took an almost direct strike (450yds from center of underwater (90 ft) detonation) and stayed a float for more than 7 hours before sinking from leaks. The carrier that sunk was also hit and severally damaged previously in the first nuke test of the operation.

I suspect that our modern CVNs are fully capable of taking a lot more damage before they go down.

I have no doubt the NORKs can make first strikes of varying sorts, but they have zero resources to sustain a war.

“Our revolutionary forces are combat-ready to sink a U.S. nuclear powered aircraft carrier with a single strike,”It’s my understanding from reading various sources over the past few months. I thought I read somewhere these carriers are disassembled at high cost at a shipyard. They’re not sunk and used as artificial reef. The reason is because they’re remarkably difficult to sink for reasons that are classified. Seems like an empty boast to me.

Don't take the NK threat so literally or get hung up over the word "sink:" He probably meant merely "destroy."

An A-bomb might (under the right conditions) simply vaporize rather than sink a carrier.

Our Destroyers can fire over the little country. One on each side and they are toast.

That is not the purpose of a Destroyer.

Technically the USN did not sink any IJN air craft carriers at Midway.

A direct hit on a moving target with a ballistic missile? Really 'right conditions'. The vaporized portions still sink eventually. Maybe if Kim smuggled a bomb on one of the carriers. BTW, it is easier to 'sink' a naval target than to 'merely destroy' it in your scenario.

You could be right, but never underestimate your opponent, especially when he’s a raving lunatic. A tactical nuke could do it. And I believe this nut is more than capable of launching one.

Over many decades the North Koreans have learned to march in lock-step with their “dear leader” and do anything he desires of them without question. All this reminds me of the movie “Northern Limit Line”. Although crude in technology and tactics, even to the point of using old T-34 tank turrets as naval armament, the modern and high-tech South Korean ship didn’t stand a chance in a one-on-one fight.

In my opinion Fat Boy has the means and firepower to carry out his threats, and the temperament to do it.

If he’s got silkworms, he may be able to do it.

That would be match hitting fuse. Russia and China need to believe it would be the US against them, not NK.
