Giants ace left-hander Madison Bumgarner was placed on the disabled list for the first time in his big league career Friday after a dirt bike accident that sent him to a hospital with bruised ribs and a sprained joint in his pitching shoulder.

San Francisco announced Bumgarner's injury Friday, a day after the accident occurred during an off day in Colorado. The Giants said Bumgarner is out of the hospital and resting at the team hotel. He is scheduled to be re-evaluated next week.

"I think the main thing is you have to be grateful he's not hurt worse than he is," Giants catcher Buster Posey said.

his teammates oughta be pissed. He couldn’t stay off the dirt bike during the season? And why isn’t there a dirt bike clause in star pitchers’ contracts?

I am a big Giants fan, and while I am grateful he wasn’t hurt more seriously, I have to ask:

Bum, WTF were you thinking ?!?!?!

...

I’d say there probably is something in the contract. He may be looking at losing a lot of money.

Just this week I've been able to walk without crutches, still in the boot. 16 weeks. Broke my leg in a mountain bike crash.

And I'm with y'all. He's a pro player? What was he thinking?

The culture is evolving into: The rules are not for me.

Bill Clinton was a big part of this for the current generation, followed by bo, big time.

News article about major league baseball, and a batter who cursed the calls by an umpire. Authority figures are being ignored, or criticized.

And Congress, and Fed Judges, etc.

Anyone remember when Walt Garrison (Cowboys) used to ride in rodeos in the off season. Drove the coaches nuts.

16 weeks. Brutal. In 1986 Bobby Grich carried an air conditioner up the stairs, hurt his back and missed season for the Angels. Millionaires need to be more prudent about their skills.

Ron Gant who was with the Braves in the glory years in the 1990s broke his leg riding a dirt bike. Scherholtz traded him away because of that.

Section 5(b) of the uniform player’s contract, under the current CBA:

“The Player and the Club recognize and agree that the Player’s participation in certain other sports may impair or destroy his ability and skill as a baseball player. Accordingly, the Player agrees that he will not engage in professional boxing or wrestling; and that, except with the written consent of the Club, he will not engage in skiing, auto racing, motorcycle racing, sky diving, or in any game or exhibition of football, soccer, professional league basketball, ice hockey or other sport involving a substantial risk of personal injury.”

Dumb on his part, I bet he feels bad for his teamates. But the Giants ownership can’t be too pissed at this guy. He has gone way way beyond the call of duty, actually putting himself at risk as far as innings pitched and rest when compared to every other MLB pitcher on the planet in the last 30 years. He is the single biggest reason for all those rings, right? It wasn’t like he did an average unremarkable job and coasted in those championship seasons and play off games.

Hmmm, I guess Tim Lincecum, who got two wins in their 2010 World Series is long forgotten. For what it’s worth, Edgar Rentaria and Pablo Sandoval were the MVP for 2010 and 2012, respectively. Bumgarner had one win in 2010 and one in 2012.
