A ping to Kenny for Old Times' Sake.

Whither KNOCK LIST?

The 2.0T is a delightful engine: I have one now.

As our FRiend Kenny used to say when he (infrequently but magnificently) cursed:

There's a reason that ass- Rudolf Diesel committed suicide...

Yet we mechanics love these engines. Like perfect women: complicated but simple, addictive, demanding, indestructible, outrageous, attention-getting, deadly and beautiful. Only a diesel engine will leave you, at the end of an endless, murderous offshore journey, in tears of thanks and praise.

I had one too. 81 I believe.

Great little car for around town.

Couldn’t do much past 60 on the highway though.

I remember my VW bug. It was the only car that would start when the temperature was -20°F. Even so, the heater was less than worthless at that temperature.

I just wish my VW TDI didn’t make so darn much noise. I can hear it banging a hundred feet away.

The regulations should have been pollution per mile, not pollution at idle (out the tale pipe).....................

VW did it right. pollution at idle was good AND pollution per mile was prob better than most.

That looks like fun.
I never thought to list my cars and motorcycles!

Some of them I miss, and some might be worth something today??

My beloved VW Thing, P-1800s,164, XK-120 the knock off’s had been abused,on hard turns caused the rear left to come loose...a squareback that let go about 900 miles from home with a trailer of motorcycles, a friend came and we double trailered home...a new Kaw 500 triple, center lower rod bearing toasted, a friend towed me over 100 miles home... 50 Ford pick up, stopping at a creek for water was not unusual...the Suburban we drove to Alaska, wife two kids and our dog...

I miss them all.

Thirty years of company rides, only one stands out.
They bought me a Chevy pickup to match the Sub, same color, from the front they looked like twins.

>>The VW’s with urea injection meet the specs.

Are you sure? That doesn’t appear to be the case from my perspective.

The 3.0L turbo-diesel engine used in the US in the Touareg, Q5, Q7, A8, and a few others has urea injection. Those cars also just went through some sort of related settlement agreement for non-compliance, I do believe.

It wasn’t just the 2.0L turbo-diesels without urea injection that were involved in all this.

This controversy was in the making because politicians were making demands that the technology and science couldnt keep up with.

At the time the cars in question were being built, the emissions standards for Diesels in the US were actually stricter than those in Europe. IMHO, the EPA had decided that Diesel cars needed to be eliminated.

This is just one of many reasons why the EPA needs to be throttled.

You look at that photo, you have to wonder where Hitler thought his cannon fodder was coming from if all German families fit in VW “sedans.”

We have a Prius, and I love it.
Also the least costly car to maintain.
Just need to get there, not make a statement.

Who cares what other people may think.

Audi Q7 and Volkswagen Touareg models with the Generation 1 engines may also be going back. The rest have new software.

I saw an interesting article on the data collected from drive by emission testing, the cars with only selective catalytic reduction (SCR) cars stood out.
Looked for it, could not find it.???

Our son had 70k on his 2015 TDI, was very happy with it.

I have a close friend with a Q5 TDI, similarly very happy with it. I haven’t talked to him in the last couple weeks since the new offer came out, not sure what he’s going to do. Doubt he’s going to let them reprogram it.

Late model VW Turbo has a poorly heat-treated chain tensioner (ratchet). Recall (and lawsuit) in the works.

Chrysler/Fiat also has faked emissions through software.
