My new-to-us lab mix has very discerning senses, spits out chewable meds even when given with his snacks. We have not had him a month yet and from the first he would take his food into the next room to look it over. Previous owners must have drugged him a lot.
Quite sure pill pockets won't work and he us not crazy for peanut butter.
Any ideas? Hope he never gets sick cause dosing him will be impossible.
I get the dogs favorite type of treat. Some of mine really liked cheese. I cover the pill, or pill bits if a very large one that needs to be divided, with lots of cheese.
I start by priming the pump with some pill less treats, then the “pilled” one, quickly followed by a few more plain pill less ones. Voila, a spoiled dog! But the medicine gets swallowed, because all of my dogs, no matter how picky, were greedy for treats!
I use cream cheese. Make a little ball with the pill in the middle.
My son uses fish oil with his dog’s meds. She loves it.
She likes spicy food so was able to sneak it in a jalapeno popper last night but out of those. She won’t touch her canned food that has some crushed into it. The bread and butter thing is another no go. Throat rubs don’t work. Me or hubby, doesn’t matter. She’d rather starve than take it. Sneaking it into bites off my own plate doesn’t work. I’ve fed both dogs at the same time but she’s smarter than that and turns up her nose at her bowl and takes off out the door.
Out the door and down the steps which she isn’t supposed to go down because she’s torn a ligament and ear tumors throw her off balance. We fenced in the front door area so she doesn’t have steps to deal with to get to the yard. But, no, just as stubborn about that and insists on going down the back steps.

I used to cut up some soft cheese (munster) into several small pieces. at least three. Hide the pill in one, Then toss the pieces one by one like they were treats.with the piece with the pill in the middle.
My dog never knew he wads pilled.

Strange. My dachshund would crawl through broken glass for one of those. Then again, I have yet to find anything that he will not eat.
My greyhound is on trifexis. A very large pill that smells like bug spray. The only way I can get him to take it is, get a piece of bologna, the stinkier the better, coat one side with peanut butter, crumble the pill on the peanut butter, fold in half with the peanut butter on the inside, give to dog. He knows the pill is inside but he wants the bologna. He can’t separate the pill from the bologna so he eats the whole thing.
That’s what I do, put pill in hotdog and down it goes. My 2 labs eat anything if it has to do with a hotdog.
I give you credit for making your own sammich.
I just found out that certain chewable heartworm tablets are *useless* unless they are actually chewed up by the dog.
I use Interceptor so they do chew those up but others *must* be chewed and often are not
Their last dose, I pounded them into powder and mixed it with cream cheese, just in case..
Just a bit of info for those who use them.
Also, they are not actually necessary every month, lasting 2-3 months, having to do with something about the life cycle of the worms.
Have not checked out that part myself, so may just be anecdotal.
Put the pill in the middle of a braunschweiger ball. Worked every time for us.

In my experience, many labs are less like really smart dogs and more like really stupid humans.
I’m sure you got plenty of good advice here. Had the same problem with our Beagle. We could get away with anything once but once he learned he would not be fooled again, even years later.
Cheese, hot dogs, linguica. We went through it all.
One humorous trick I came up with was to “accidently” drop the pill stuffed treat on the floor and lunge for it while yelling “No!” and “Drop it!”.
He would pretty much wolf anything down with that technique.
Maybe wrap the cream cheese with a slice of cooked bacon.
Hands-free method: Use two plastic spoons. Make a quenelle of butter enclosing the pill, which must be completely covered. Use tip of one spoon to dislodge quennelle into eager dog’s mouth. Slides down bypassing taste buds.
To make it more fun ask the dog to sit or speak or something for the butter. It always tastes better when it’s earned.
Works for Jack’s daily dose of two bitter horse-sized pills at once. 2 other dogs line up behind him hoping for the same.
We do the pill battle monthly. Finally found that if I cut the pill in small pieces and make American cheese “ravioli” by sealing the pill in the cheese he will eat it. It’s the nasty smell so when it’s sealed in the cheese I think it masks it.
