Olivia Newton-John has revealed she is battling cancer for the second time.
The Australian singer and actress was forced to postpone her US and Canadian tour dates next month after discovering back pain was actually breast cancer that has metastasised to the sacrum.
That same back pain had earlier caused her to postpone the first half of her tour, before the cancer was discovered.
In a statement on her Facebook page early this morning, Ms Newton-John said she is confident after a short course of photon radiation therapy she will "be back later in the year, better than ever".
"I decided on my direction of therapies after consultation with my doctors and natural therapists and the medical team at my Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in Melbourne, Australia," she said.
Professor Jonathan Cebon, the medical director of the Research Centre, said he was saddened to hear Newton-John's cancer had returned.
"Late relapses from breast cancer can occur, especially for women with 'hormone receptor-positive' breast cancer," Professor Cebon said.
"These relapses can occur sometimes even decades after initial treatment for early breast cancer.
"This unpredictability of breast cancer, and its ability to return after many years, is an area of active research at the institute through our Translational Breast Cancer Program."
Newton-John opened the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in The Austin Hospital in 2014.
The British-born Australian star first battled breast cancer 25 years ago and has since used her own experience to promote awareness about the disease.
Wish her a speedy recovery.
Sad. Beautiful lady, nice voice. Like so many in my younger years had a big crush on her.
Photon radiation therapy comes about in part from our knowledge of quantum mechanics. One of the most important contributors to the field of quantum mechanics was Nobel Prize winning physicist Max Born, who was Olivia Newton-John’s grandfather. The good we do can help our families after we’re gone!
She seems to be a genuinely nice lady. Hoping for a total recovery.
Now that’s a legacy!
Amazing! Thanks for that historical tidbit.
Ditto. When she walked out in that leather outfit in "Grease", that made it worth it for me to sit through an entire musical when she was the only real vocal talent they had.
She’s actually done something useful with her wealth. I pray she has a full recovery.
She was my first crush when I was 7 year old boy and saw her in Grease.
Unlike many celebrities, she always seemed like a real nice lady. I pray all goes well for Olivia and she makes a complete recovery and she is back out there performing soon.
