A few weeks ago we had a thread with a subject of who the greatest male vocalist ever were. There were many great comments on that thread. So for tonight, I am asking who do you think are the three greatest female vocalists ever?
Vera Lynn, Ella Fitzgerald, Doris Day.
Adele and Julie Andrews.
Jennifer Warnes ... when I hear her sing I know where I was at and what I was doing, numerous times and songs places and she just moves me with her voice ...
I know it’ll anger some, but Barbra Streisand has a powerful voice.
More to consider:
Billie Holiday
Annie Lennox
and, in her prime, Whitney Houston
Too many to name only 3. This thread keeps changing my mind!
Tough to pick just three. I can definitely see Karen Carpenter in there. Sad how her life ended. The same can be said for Whitney Houston.
Judith Durham ...
Dang it I just voted for Jennifer Warne
(I was Young, I could handle more than one back then)
Ella Fitzgerald
Hillary Clinton, Chelsea Clinton, and then Hillary again.
Also for Nobel Prizes, Pulitzer Prizes, Oscars, Emmys, Tonys, and such. ...and for Pope.
He’s captain of a lesser grade starship.
All three Dixie Chicks /s
Fantastic voices:
1. Joni Mitchell
2. Judy Collins
3. Whitney Huston
Worst female singers with no vocal range:
Ann Murray
Lynda Ronstadt.
BOOKMARK
Dangit I have voted and then there are so many that I forgot
(I vote for all of them)
Country.......Patsy Cline
Rock............Stevie Nicks
Among current singer/songwriters I think Pink is outstanding.
Dude, you’re the mumbling moron. EF took the shtick known as “scat” that Louis Armstrong had come up with because he couldn’t remember some lines and EF made it into a classic form of entertainment. No other female performer of the past century can match EF’s range of octaves, clarity and strength.
> Jo Stafford, perfect pitch, sweet gentle soulful voice <
Jo Stafford, yes, absolutely! She’s my favorite singer, period. It’s a shame that the current generation doesn’t know more about her.
Maudy Fricker!
I agree, first note sung and you know it’s her. Mama Cass Elliott had that same”original” voice, but she was no Karen Carpenter.
Grace Slick
