Shocker! Daniel Day-Lewis Quits Acting (EXCLUSIVE)
Variety ^ | June 20, 2017 | Brent Lang

Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, widely considered one of the preeminent actors of his generation, is retiring from acting, Variety has learned.

The 60-year-old star, who has played presidents, writers, and gang leaders in a career that has spanned four decades, has one final film awaiting release, “Phantom Thread,” a drama set in the world of high fashion. It is scheduled to hit theaters on December 25, 2017 and reunites him with Paul Thomas Anderson, who directed Day-Lewis to a best actor Oscar in 2007’s “There Will Be Blood.” Day-Lewis intends to help promote the movie, according to a person familiar with his plans.

He did not give a reason for his retirement. In a statement, Day-Lewis’ spokeswoman, Leslee Dart, confirmed the news: “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject. ”

Day-Lewis is the performer to ever win three best actor Oscars, for the title role in Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” his turn as a rapacious oil man in “There Will Be Blood,” and his performance as writer and artist Christy Brown in “My Left Foot.” He earned two other Academy Award nominations for “Gangs of New York” and “In the Name of the Father.”

This isn't a complete surprise. He has only done a few films over the last 20 years or so.

He made one of my faves of all time.

If this was his only film, it would be enough.

I had never seen him until I saw “Gangs of New York”. He was mesmerizing and I could not take my eyes off him and Butcher Bill was an actual person. Lincoln was great too.

Wonder why he doesn’t just limit his work to Shakespeare?

There Will Be Blood was a crap movie. He got the Oscar because they knew his not getting one for Gangs of New York was a total ripoff. The guy who won for The Pianist hasn’t had a decent performance since.

Disagree, it was not a great movie but it most definitely not crap. DDL performance carried that movie, one of the best performances in a movie in a very long time

My Irish 6th great grandfather was a fur trapper and ran a trading post up the Mohawk River...he was also in the Provincial Army...He died fighting the French and Indians at Lake George, NY 1755..

as one of the “Yankee Doodle Dandies” because of his Leatherstocking costume, I always think of him as looking like Daniel Day-Lewis..

:)

He’s done this before. Once, he left a live performance in London, announced his retirement and became a cobbler in either France or Italy. I am NOT making that up, either.

Great actor with some issues.

I’ll have to watch that.

Sounds strange to say but he kind of ruined me for his acting after “Gangs of New York” and “There Will Be Blood”. He was just THAT GOOD at acting evil or as the bad guy.

I saw him last weekend in “A Room With a View” as an hilariously awkward Victorian “intellectual”. I felt he should have been nominated for Oscar but not to be. I love the movie.

There Will Be Blood was an exceptionally fine movie.

The beginning of the movie, with no dialog, just the sound of men working to dig for ore, and then oil, was unique and mesmerizing.

The depiction of the relationships between the oilman, his adopted son, and the preacher was also very compelling.

I highly recommend anyone who hasn't watched it, to make sure and see it the first chance they get.

I’m very sad to read this. Daniel Day-Lewis is my favorite actor, and the long wait between his films is rewarded by the excellence of his performances. He was Peter Jackson’s first choice for the role of Aragorn in “Lord of the Rings,” but turned it down because it would require being away from his family on location in New Zealand for two years. You can’t fault his priorities.

Great story. I’ve heard stories about how he stays in character during the entire production of a film. Very quirky.
