Shocker! Daniel Day-Lewis Quits Acting (EXCLUSIVE)
Variety ^ | June 20, 2017 | Brent Lang

Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, widely considered one of the preeminent actors of his generation, is retiring from acting, Variety has learned.

The 60-year-old star, who has played presidents, writers, and gang leaders in a career that has spanned four decades, has one final film awaiting release, “Phantom Thread,” a drama set in the world of high fashion. It is scheduled to hit theaters on December 25, 2017 and reunites him with Paul Thomas Anderson, who directed Day-Lewis to a best actor Oscar in 2007’s “There Will Be Blood.” Day-Lewis intends to help promote the movie, according to a person familiar with his plans.

He did not give a reason for his retirement. In a statement, Day-Lewis’ spokeswoman, Leslee Dart, confirmed the news: “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject. ”

Day-Lewis is the performer to ever win three best actor Oscars, for the title role in Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” his turn as a rapacious oil man in “There Will Be Blood,” and his performance as writer and artist Christy Brown in “My Left Foot.” He earned two other Academy Award nominations for “Gangs of New York” and “In the Name of the Father.”

For Mohicans, he “went mountain man” with reenactors, and lived in buckskins, hunted with flintlocks, etc. It shows in the movie. He was the character, it was more than acting.

I have a feeling he is probably a nut like many other people who get paid enormous amounts of money to pretend they are someone else.

He was so funny as “Cecil Vyse.”

Maybe Martin Scorsese will come up with a third good role in a New York story for Daniel and bring him out of retirement.

Agree!

I used to pause that exact frame/scene, for as long as the VCR would pause, years ago ;-)

Excellent movie, too.

Oh,God! How can I *possibly* go on???

I was sad to learn of Eastwood's demise. He did some good work and seemed like a thoroughly decent man.

IOW,Clint was one in a million among showbiz types.

He should have at least played a Batman villain. I would have loved to see someone outdo Ledger, and he is the only one that could.

He may not like being offered so many scripts with him as the stars grandfather, employer, coach or spirit guide.
I wonder if Daniel is still not speaking to his brother Sean.
A Telegraph article from 2013 said the two had not spoken since the early 90’s. It seems Daniel thought his brother Sean was using their relationship to curry favors from various book publishers. Plus there were other unresolved issues. Sometimes, one just becomes used to living without certain family members.

Clint is still alive. The report of his death was false.

“There Will be Blood” was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. I was almost crying out in anguish it was so slow and boring. Every chance to fill in with, with nothing, was taken. Pure crappola. If I hadn’t been with other people, I would have walked out.

DDL as Lincoln was just.... spectacular. I can watch that flick over and over.

And the performance turned in by David Strathairn as William Seward was almost as good. But as for the movie as a whole, take away the performances by Lewis and Strathairn and the lack of historical accuracy and the performance of Sally Fields make the it a joke. It's worth watching solely because of the Daniel Day Lewis, David Strathairn, and one or two others.

I saw that in a theater when it came out. I realized DDL had tremendous potential when he stole a scene that he only appeared in in the background. It was an interior scene with that lovely lady actress and someone else. DDL was outside the window in the backyard, holding his teacup, ever so properly, while swatting away flies. In my humble opinion, he stole that scene and completely distracted from the main event.

Yeah I am not shocked at all. He always seems to me uncomfortable being in the spotlight so I wish him well and look forward to his “re entry” back into Hollywood in a decade as they all seem to do.
