A majority of Republicans in a new survey think colleges and universities have a negative effect on the U.S.

The Pew Research Center poll finds 58 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents think colleges and universities hurt the country.

Just 36 percent of Republicans think they have a positive effect.

In contrast, a large majority of Democrats, 72 percent, say colleges and universities have a positive effect on the country.

Overall, slightly more than half of the public, 55 percent, thinks colleges and universities help the U.S., according to the survey. …

Polls such as this one need to be a little more specific in wording their questions.

To most Americans, the word "country" evokes an emotional response, usually of a positive nature. "My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty . . ', etc.

Democrats -- who represent a rather large minority of the voting population -- are mostly hung up on a fiction they've been told by their peers, parents and pedagogues for generations: that "we" are the government. As far as they are concerned, what's good for the government is good for us, the country.

It is not surprising that Democrats are highly supportive of higher education, especially state-sponsored higher education, as the amount of money spent would seem to be worth it: an ever-increasing pool of college graduates steeped in the pot of social justice ready to go forth and change the world, electing Democrats and Socialists as a first step.

Republicans lost the college advantage fifty years ago, and it's unlikely to swing back for another fifty years.

The catalyst? Viet-Nam.

donna, I apologize for my part of being uncivil. The tone of your posts touched a nerve with me, and I should have just let it ride. Sorry. We have to stick together here.

Er, I thought yours was a joke post:

"I don’t think that is the answer. The answer is to get students to think for themselves, and to fix the stranglehold leftists have on higher education."

Why would we continue to send the uneducated to expensive colleges to learn liberalism? I simply thought you were kidding.

Liberalism isn’t the only thing learned at college. That is why young people have to be armed by their parents going in, so they aren’t an empty head to be filled with a brain full of mush.

Young people going anywhere, to college, the military, or a trade need to be taught critical thinking so they can think for themselves.

We cannot cede higher education to liberals.

Don't you see that you are supporting the status quo?

You're joking, right?
