Astronomers say they've detected "strange signals" coming from the direction of a small, dim star located about 11 light-years from Earth.
Researchers picked up the mysterious signals on May 12 using the Arecibo Observatory, a huge radio telescope built inside of a Puerto Rican sinkhole.
The radio signals appear to be coming from Ross 128, a red dwarf star that's not yet known to have any planets and is about 2,800 times dimmer than the sun. Abel Méndez, an astrobiologist at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo, said the star was observed for 10 minutes, during which time the signal was picked up and observed to be "almost periodic".
Méndez said it's extremely unlikely that intelligent extraterrestrial life is responsible, but noted that the possibility can't yet be ruled out.
"The SETI [Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence] groups are aware of the signals," Méndez wrote in an email to Business Insider.

More seriously, when I was a yute there were reports of radio signal echos, with a 22 year delay.
IIRC, they were attributed by some to a civilization 11 light years away...

The brightest radio emissions the earth has are totally random.
The are from the radar sets the US and the former SU direct over the north pole to detect a launch of ICBMs.
The signals are deliberately random so an opponent can’t anticipate what is being broadcast and pre-broadcast a falsified signal to spoof the system.

...Taking a closer look, the team found they could reproduce the peryton signals received by the telescope by simply opening the door to a microwave in the break room before its timer went off—that tiny moment of time when the magnetron was still pumping out microwaves when the door was open—that allowed for a very short burst of microwave activity that was of course picked up by the telescope.
LOVE IT!
Humans collectively couldn't generate sufficient energy to power a theoretical transmitter that would send a signal inter-stellar distances and have enough residual strength on the receiving end that an Aricebo sized receiver could recognize it..
