A bag of moon dust from NASAs Apollo 11 mission which a woman bought for $995 in 2015 -- sold for $1.8 million at a Sothebys auction this week following an intense court battle.
The bag, filled with moon dust by astronaut Neil Armstrong during the first manned mission to the moon in July 1969, had previously been misidentified and mistakenly sold at an online government auction. NASAs attempt to retrieve the bag failed after a federal judge in December ruled it legally belonged to a Chicago-area woman who bought it two years ago.
The buyer in Tuesdays auction declined to be identified. The pre-sale estimate was $2 million to $4 million.

FYI, story update
“That’s one small bag of dust for man, one giant pile of cash for mankind.”
all the government had to do was bid $1 more ... and it would have been there’s again!
iirc this bag was an overpack for a bag actually filled with moon dust, and what was in the overpack was a few milligrams that came off the inner bag.
1.8 mil aint a bad haul!
How much money did the government spend trying to get this dust back? How many pounds of moon dust does the government have? How many other “clearance” sales have given up artifacts that the government “shouldn’t” be selling?
I know the sort of person who if something isn’t touched for a week, wants it out of the house or out of the lab. “Get rid of it!” “Throw it out!!!”
Penny wise, pound foolish.
To fellow FR martians/venusians/mercurians/moonmen/moonwomen:
There is a vsauce video that explains how there is recent (coming to earth within the last 1000 years) mars dust in every human brain (or equivalent). Point being molecules get around.
Same must apply to the Moon, perhaps more so than Mars.

Well played!
Is that Keith snorting his dad’s ashes?
Could you summarize the video you saw regarding this dust issue? Seems interesting.
Thanks.
Eventually Moon dust will be common. The value is the provenance of this Moon dust.
Ah-choo!
Where can I watch vsauce videos? Are they in the applesauce aisle?
In engineering school, we had to calculate the probability that you would, in your entire lifetime, breathe a single molecule of air that Jesus breathed. The answer was astounding.
There is a sucker born every minute.
In the description below the youtube are about 30 links to support his statements, such as some mars molecules are in every human body.
The Government/NASA are very, very possessive with moon rocks (and dust).
My neighbor was instrumental in the development of the Space Shuttle and, in fact flew a mission on the Challenger.
He is a Professor at our College, Astro Physics, and tried to get one moon rock for temporary display at The Museum Of The Rockies. Even with his direct ties to NASA the answer was: NO!
There is even a vsauce-related video that describes how the channel got to be named vsauce. Sounded interesting, like it was from some random name generator. But, his style is so rapid fire data, I don't exactly recall that particular factoid .
LOL...seriously? “Vsauce” is real and not a typo?
I remember a few years back when our kids would proclaim good things to be “hot sauce.”
