Another Million Consumers Cut the TV Cord Last Quarter

While the rate of cord cutting during the second quarter wasn't quite as aggressively dire as many analysts predicted, the latest wave of TV subscribers lost by the traditional cable TV industry wasn't what you'd call good for the pay TV industry, either. Wall Street research firm MoffettNathanson predicts that once tallied, the sector lost about 1 million pay TV subscribers last quarter, with the losses hitting Dish Network, DirectTV, and AT&T particularly hard.

Dish for example lost another 196,000 subscribers on the quarter, and that tally includes the additions seen to the company's Sling TV streaming video services (which Dish refuses to break out specifically to lesson the apparent impact).

I am currently in the process of cutting the cord with Comcast, ...

I cut the cord with Comcast last December, just kept the internet. Switching to FIOS would be more of the same.

I use an HD TV antenna and pick up 60-70 channels depending on the weather. Netflix and Hulu fill in the gaps in movies and TV shows.

I don't miss paying for 200 channels when I only watched a few.

What makes me fume is being a long time customer and they raise your rates but let newbies in with next to nothing rates.

I know a guy who regularly switches between Comcast and Verizon every two years for that reason. Won't work for me as I have sworn never to do business with Comcast again following a string of stupidities about a decade back.

Haven't cut the cord yet but pretty much watch everything On-Demand through either XFinity, Netflix, Amazon, HBO-Go, or Youtube. In addition, my wife watches Russian TVoIP.

Noticed my data usage is creeping up month after month. Last month, 830 GB (twice as much as a year ago).

Almost going to hit Comcast's 1024 GB limit, after which I'll have to pay a premium. This is where the cable companies are going to hit the cord-cutters.

I hate when someone has to explain the joke to me. That was funny.

I turned in all my set-to-boxes in 2010 and bought a Roku device.
I haven’t missed anything yet.

Absolutely Nothing to watch on the alphabet channels. Life is too short to waste watching that garbage.

The brain killing commercials drove me away a long time ago. Always pushing drugs, fear, disease, death, and more fear....and anything else that will make people feel bad.

All that will happen is that the ISPs will eventually get more expensive when no one is buying their TV and phone packages. Get ready for $200 internet access.

I never had a cord to cut. We’ve never had cable. Surprise, my kids grew up healthy and happy.

We used that new technology that is astounding millennials. The TV antenna that allows you to get free basic tv through a new government program.

I called Verizon about that. We have internet only.

We can get a new package of internet only for $69 a month vs. the $120 we were paying. They can send a guy over to disconnect. In one to two weeks, a guy will come over and connect the new service.

I asked “Doesn’t that sound just a bit stupid?” and told her I needed to speak with someone who could actually make a decision to keep a tenyear customer.

Get ready for $200 internet access.

Dump them as well. Get unlimited data on your phone and set up a hotspot for your computer.

For me it’s not necessarily the cost as much as content. I’m not paying for MSNBC and the gay channel. I thought about getting Sling TV until I saw their promo picture was Samantha Bee. No thanks.

Cut the cord. Who the heck needs pay TV when you have high speed internet and streaming video? It’s 20th century tech for 20th century propaganda.

Watching sports on an antenna is awesome.

I went from about $250 a month to $110 a month.

How?

-Canceled home phone, that was bundled with cable package.
-Kept the web.
-Played around with trial periods of Sling and the other providers. After about 2 months my former cable provider called me back and got me the package I really wanted. We are watching more on Amazon Prime and hulu than before. A lot better programming. And YouTube has great documentaries, for free!
