I wouldn’t bother with it. Interesting bit of history but I got tired of replacing extractors in mine. When an AR is so reliable and inexpensive if you want a rifle to actually shoot why buy anything else? Now for hunting I don’t think there are many states that will let you hunt with a .223. Which is curious because the gun grabbers insist these are “too powerful for civilian use”,

I’ve had good luck with the PPU. It’s made by prvi partisan in Serbia. Good price point too.

Aguila has been on a quality improvement program. Might try a few boxes to see how your new firestick likes it.

Dad has an Israeli arms licensed M1 carbine and loves it. I find it easy to shoot.

No Winchester whitebox, no Tula. I wouldn’t fire S&B out of anything I own.

I would probably go with Remington, Federal, Mag Tech.

The M-1 Carbine doesn’t have much of a reputation for stopping bad guys. Much of that rep is not the fault of the gun, but the ammunition. The brands listed are most often found in the FMJ or military ball configuration and are fine for having fun plinking. However, if you think you might use the weapon for defensive purposes, I’d suggest semi-jacketed hollow points as a better choice. Corbon also makes a great defensive round for it.

A lovely weapon with very inferior ballistics. I would suggest you shoot cheap ammo unless you are hunting deer. Hornady makes great ammo for this but would suggest a more powerful weapon when hunting deer.

It is a lovely weapon but far under powered for its original mission.

It is a lovely and beautiful weapon but that is all it is. I do not have one in my collection as they are to damn expensive today. I should have bought one 50 years ago.

If under 100 yards and a deer or human it is okay. Otherwise I would suggest something more powerful.

As others said, you can’t go wrong with PPU/Privi ammo. It is my go to for testing out a new-to-me firearm. Plus, they do produce some of the obsolete calibers

Load it with name brand ammo and it’s a great rifle, just keep it within it’s limit’s. With ball ammo it almost tickles 1000 ft-lbs of energy. Feed it hollow point rounds and it’s quite deadly, again keep it within it’s means. Good for home defense and small game. I have a couple of carbines and two pistols chambered in that round, both Ruger Blackhawk old models with 7 1/2 inch barrels. I would caution anybody shooting this through a pistol, definitely wear hearing protection, they are loud. They will shoot about a 3 ft flame out the end with factory rounds. I carry one in the truck when on the ranch and have taken a ton of coyotes, Javalina’s and even a few feral hog’s. If you reload you can get some amazing performace with the lighter bullets. I’ve crono’d 85 grain HP’s at almost 2000 fps through the 7 1/2 inch barrels.Very flat shooting for a pistol and still carry around 700 ft-lbs at 100 yards. Plus I have to add they’re just a fun rifle to have. Enjoy!

The repro Inlands have a poor reputation - right out of the box there were problems with bolt heat treatment (too soft). I’m not impressed with what I read about their customer service either.

Recommend Desert Publications M1 CARBINE Owners Manual
You can find it online or at gun shows
Disassemble and clean it get about 10 or 12 magazines and a box of milsurplus ammo go shooting this gun is accurate and fun
Plus is really reliable I have run 100’s of rounds through mine at a set and it just keeps humming mine is an early universal with mainly GI parts
Again have fun get the right web gear and you can tote a couple of hundred rounds with out breaking a sweat (I am 5’10” 170lbs and this gun fits me like a glove) And don’t listen to any abuse of this platform My Dad used it in three war zones. It kept him alive.

Enjoy your new ‘war baby’

Remington or American Eagle.

I remember when I got mine ammo was $15 a box, now it’s close to $30.

Very fun shot. Great to learn iron sight on.

Enjoy.

Really confused by the gripes on Sellier & Belloit it is expensive but when necessary I use it as diagnostic on recalcitrant weapons for function and accuracy S&B have been making ammo literally since ammo was invented
Really like it other than $$$$

I’ve shot PPU in .223/5.56 and .308. Been happy with it. Never had a problem.

Congrats on your new M1!

Sadly, I don’t have one or much to offer, except a story from a friend of mine. His Dad was a doctor in the Aleutians during WWII, and the biggest danger they had was polar bears.

Well, they quickly discovered that their M1 Carbines only made the bears mad, so if a bear was wandering around the base, they would hide in their tents and chuck grenades at it until it went away.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy yours a lot. I’d love to get one, but given prices and ammunition, I’d rather have an M1A or something more potent (with a more useable ammo supply).

Carbines are great. Fun to shoot and easier to score hits with than a sidearm. Never had problems with GI extractors, but all the ones I’ve fired weren’t reliable with aftermarket 30 round magazines. Korean made magazines seemed good to go.

You’ll hear people say the round is a pipsqueak, hardly more dangerous than a Red Ryder.

Read up on Jim Cirilo, Audie Murphy and John George. They would all take exception, and so would the men they killed with the pipsqueak rifle.
