New York City is now the most expensive place in the U.S. to buy cigarettes thanks to a new price hike Mayor Bill de Blasio signed into law Monday. The Associated Press (AP) reports that the new legislation includes a price hike that would raise the price of a pack of cigarettes to $13 a pack and restrictions on the number of places allowed to sell cigarettes.

Eric Garner was being hassled by the police on Staten Island because he was selling individual black market cigarettes. There is already a lucrative black market in NYC and this will probably be the death knell of legal cig sales. With the way things are going might be easier to buy pot legally than cigs.

Are the Mexican cartels growing tobacco in the forests of Virginia, yet?

The only people that will pay $13 a pack are tourists. Wealthy people will just stock up when they go outside the city. Poor will buy on the black market. Great job Mayor De Commie-o

...price hike Mayor Bill de Blasio signed into law Monday.

I did not know the city sold the cigarettes. I thought private businesses did.

Only a matter of time before I run into black market cigarettes dealers coming out of Grand Central.

Exactly - you can go to a nearby Indian Reservation and buy no-brand cigs for $1/pack

In fact, cigarette smuggling from PA and upstate NY Indian reservations seems to be a major business for most muslim immigrants running small convenience stores.

The Mayor of the New York City announcing a “price hike”?

When did New York City start selling cigarettes?

These same anti smoking zealots are the same folk advocating the legalization of pot.

I can buy them in VA for $5.00/pk. I could make $5.00 pack if I sold them in NYC for $10.00. The buyer could resell them at $12.00. That’s $50/cartoon. 100 cartons = $5,000. I can drive there in back in 10 hours. That’s $500/hr. Not bad.

I’m always amazed at how US municipalities have so much control over taxation. In Canada all you can implement is property tax, and a few provincial governments have allowed municipalities to charge a small “tourist development” fee to hotel rooms. Sales taxes are strictly limited to the federal and provincial governments. I suspect that NY State could limit NYC’s powers, but with the Demoncrats also controlling the state government we all know that won’t happen.

People have already figured that out. :) I think there was a story in Richmond about some Asians getting busted for cig smuggling up the I-95.

I’ll take an America that smokes and drinks and remains the land of the free; the home of the brave.

The ‘greatest generation’ was called that for a reason.

I’ve never smoked but would never deny other people their right to do so.

What makes an ass like Deblasio into to pompous, arrogant jerk he is. Genetics?

Then we need prenatal screening.

I predict:

A massive black market.

An increase in crime.

An increase in corruption.

A decrease in tax revenue.

Flat usage of cigarettes.

An increase of wasted police man-hours cracking down on the black market.
