USAA Ad issues and membership response
Just me | 28SEP2017 | Me

Asking if any USAA members are interested in a campaign to overturn some bad decisions management has made recently. More below.

Sorry for the vanity.

Yes they are still advertising and responding poorly about the NFL, but there is more to the story. They responded poorly to the Hannity issue prior. Their service has taken a nose dive over the past 10-15 years. Why? Because they have been too focused on growth and expanding membership than on service to their members. This is a cooperative and we are the owners. Time we took charge.

Bylaws state that 1% of membership can call for a meeting. That's about 120K. Rather than people leaving I'd like to see people stand up for their rights as members and return the organization to it's former glory.

So far I'm talking with 5 others. 1 has requested the formal rules on how to submit such a request. Once organized, and I've never done something like this so I'm learning as I go, we can make a list of what we want to accomplish.

My initial thoughts are:

1) Change director nomination rules to remove only board nominations. That is how we lose our voice. Any member should be allowed to nominate another member. Directors must include a range of member categories and not just financial, flag officers, and heads of other companies to ensure protection of member interests.

2) Call of no-confidence in the CEO and head of Marketing.

3) Stop all advertising outside of military organizations. Return to pre-2000 advertising policy. Save us money and put it back into our SSAs, reduce our premiums, or invest in returning to prior service levels.

4) No further classes of members. Membership growth stops at the current status and consideration for pulling back to active, veterans, and immediate family only. That is what started the service downturn.

I had some other thoughts last night, but I'll have to try to remember them.

Anyway if anyone is interested let me know. I've put out a tweet and am organizing currently through a private throwaway email. I'll provide to anyone that asks.

Keep us posted. I’m a USAA member and I sent that company an email on Tuesday saying they’d lose a 40-year member if they didn’t do something. So far no sign of any action.

No worries - I just figured I could reach a lot of folks that way. I know not everyone uses that forum. We’ll be reaching out on a number of places to get as many as we can.

I have been messaging them about it. Got an initial form letter response. Nothing more in the past few days.

Great idea and good luck. I’ve thought USAA would be a bellwether on this issue because the NFLs actions are so egregiously contrary to those of their membership. But what I’ve seen from the company so far has been the usual liberal mealy-mouthed mush. It will be obvious if that changes and if they go, others will go too.

These are great ideas and I will support your efforts. That said, I am changing car insurance for my 4 cars, but I am keeping a Credit card with them that I never use. That way I am still a member, but they get NO MONEY from me.

I have been a USAA member for 47 years. Only because of my fathers 35 years service in the Navy. I am in

I’ve been a member since the 80s and watch member service steadily erode. Just yesterday they messed up a four figure transaction even though I took extra steps before the fact to make sure there were no hiccups. Sure enough, they managed to foul it up anyway.

Our only non-AmEx credit card is USAA. All our insurance (except life) is with USAA. Our insurance premiums are our largest monthly expense by far. I’m really fed up with their poor service and seeingly uncaring attitude about member needs. The problem is that there are far too many members now and they’re pretty much like any other big bank.....maybe worse.

Count me in.
I have messaged and posted on the community blog along with many others.
Lots of us are REALLY pissed at this lack of concern for member response.

When I started to see USAA ATMs in CVS stores in D.C. I knew that USAA had lost its way and lost touch with its roots.

Check into Donegals Insurance. Saved a literal mint when I changed. They use your credit score in underwriting. Who knew people with great credit scores and no debt were low risk responsible people. ;-) (Home insurance too as well as liability umbrella... Tough underwriting but spectacular rates)

The warm and fuzzy USAA military family TV ads include USAA employees and one person who works in a lobbying firm. That is borderline deceptive in my book.
