Caltech Scientists Awarded Nobel Prize For Finding Ripples In Universe

Two Caltech scientists are part of a trio to win the Nobel Physics Prize for their roles in detecting faint ripples flying through the universe — gravitational waves predicted a century ago...that provide a new understanding of the universe.

Sweden’s Royal Academy of Sciences announced that the winners are Barry Barish and Kip Thorne of the California Institute of Technology and Rainer Weiss of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Thorne and Barish both received calls from the Nobel committee early Tuesday morning.

The three were key to the first observation of gravitational waves in September 2015. When the discovery was announced several months later, it was a sensation not only among scientists but the general public.

The scientists were honored for a combination of highly advanced theory and ingenious equipment design. black hole merger simulation Caltech Scientists Awarded Nobel Prize For Finding Ripples In Universe

Gravitational waves are extremely faint ripples in the fabric of space and time, generated by some of the most violent events in the universe. The waves detected by the laureates came from the collision of two black holes some 1.3 billion light-years away. A light-year is about 5.88 trillion miles.

“The first direct observation of gravitational waves … is an extraordinary demonstration of scientific vision and persistence,” Caltech president Thomas F. Rosenbaum said in a statement. “Through four decades of development of exquisitely sensitive instrumentation—pushing the capacity of our imaginations—we are now able to glimpse cosmic processes that were previously undetectable. It is truly the start of a new era in astrophysics.”

The waves were predicted by Einstein a century ago as part of his theory of general relativity. General relativity says that gravity is caused by heavy objects bending space-time, which itself is the four-dimensional way that astronomers see the universe.

I knew it! I was just curious how long it would take for someone to post this. Took only 12 minutes..

Dude, Kip Thorne *rocks* ... for a playboy and atheist.

But he knows relativity and black holes.

And he doesn’t seem like such a jerk as Hawking.

Once again, two old white guys take the Nobel. No surprise there.

Finally! Now that we have confirmed the existence of ripples in the universe, we can now... uh...

Very important work.

The ripples cause global warming everywhere else in the universe except earth. Especially on Mars, Pluto and Uranus.

I think the award is well deserved.

Thorne was a student of John Wheeler as was Richard Feynman. Wheeler is probably the most underrated physicist. He promoted the the study of gravity back when it was very unpopular in physics, because it was so difficult to test theoretical predictions.

We really do need some ‘new’ modern constellations.

Most of them are totally unrecognizable to modern humans..................

Einstein predicted things that later where found to ACTUALLY OCCUR. No one has to preach to you about scientific consensus or chase around heretics who disagree with him. That’s how you tell the difference between actual science and a statist religion masquerading and science

Gravity waves were detected because of an event recorded by two instruments proposed to be caused by black holes billions of miles away because a computer model said so. These are well funded projects , funding predicated on a computer model. Where have we heard this line of salesmanship before?

We now live in an age where any claim made by established officials is taken as truth, When often claims have to do with truth or any real measurement but just model fudged data to back up funding . The computer models to establish global warming money is an example. How can the public even know if any claims made by scientists, based on computer models are truth.?

There are other scientists with theories to explain why these gravity experiments are not detecting anything, but don't expect main stream to do any investigative reporting.. because if cal tech says so, they are smarter than anybody and every news headline will be lock and step parroting the same headline, no questions asked, that's politics, propaganda... not science.

Here are some basic questions not being asked
