My Wife’s mother was engaged to my wife’s uncle who’s B-17, the Sharon Belle, was shot down in 1943. Her mother wound up marrying my wife’s father, who was the brother of the airman killed. My wife’s mother was a Wave, or something, and spent the war organizing USO functions. I am fuzzy on exactly what the functions were, but she had autographs from many prominent big name entertainers of that era. We took her to see Glenn Miller’s band in the mid 80’s or so. At least we were told it was his band. My kids love that music because it reminds them of their grandmother.

I love most music from the late 30’s as when Benny Goodman put the “swing” to it and also the big bands of the 1940’s such as Kay Kyser, Harry James, Xavier Cugat, Esquivel, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey and many others.

I grew up on 60’s and 70’s rock. One of my specialties is obscure rock from that period. Great bands that never got much if any airplay.

To name a few, that a whole lot of folks have never heard I’d start with Audience, Horslips, Fruupp, Cressida, Beggar’s Banquet, Colosseum, Flash, Gentle Giant, Arabesque, Stackridge, Clear Light, Tomorrow, Stray, Curved Air, Warhorse, The Open Mind...I could name maybe hundreds more.

Some of those bands are some of the greatest bands out there and a pity they weren’t given more airtime on the FM rock stations back then. I was one of those long haired FM types (as Rush calls them) and I would often play these unknown bands on the graveyard shift.
