Gerald McCoy [Tampa Bay]: 'It's going to be an uproar' if players forced to stand [ed]

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive lineman Gerald McCoy, speaking on Adam Schefter's Know Them From Adam podcast, said he thinks there might "be an uproar" if NFL players are forced to stand for the national anthem.

"I don't think guys are gonna like it," McCoy said, when asked about the possible reaction from players. "I think it's gonna be an uproar if that is to happen because you're basically taking away a constitutional right to freedom of speech. If guys wanna have a, I guess you would call it a peaceful protest, I don't think it's right to take that away."

Are these guys really this stupid? - but the answer is right there in front of me.

I know!!! It is just amazing to watch people making enormous amounts of money playing a game, putting it all at risk for, what exactly? They will completely ruin their own livlihood, and then whine and moan about it without an ounce of self reflection as to how what they did is connected to their losing their big paychecks.

Yes, they are really this stupid.

If the players refuse to cooperate with the league, this gets very messy indeed. Then the league (and the teams) must enact punishment - no punishment, no policy

The only hope the NFL has at this point is to let the word out to the agents that contracts are going to be smaller starting immediately. That affects the agents' bottom line as well as the players. The agents can say "listen, this is going to hurt you ... YOU ... financially. You may not even get a starting deal. Are you sure you want to keep doing this? If so, perhaps you need a new agent." Then we'll see how it goes.

Ah silly me, I forgot Rodger Goodell is in charge! Hah hah hah! He'll just write a sternly worded letter and then be ignored. Oh wait, he already wrote the letter? Okay, on to the ignoring part...

The players are in a very bad spot. They took a moral stand and I think honestly didn’t anticipate the resistance they’d get from the fans.

When this started impacting the bottom line, the NFL took notice and the owners took notice.

It was very easy for the players to make their stand and for the brass to look the other way when there was no consequence to their actions. The fans gave them consequences. So now there’s a price to pay for continuing.

But the players are in a very bad spot. Either their original stand is either principled or it isn’t. They are either morally strong or are morally compromised. They either sincerely were trying to convey something or they weren’t.

If they all stand now, they’re weak. They may as well sew “Slave Name” to their jerseys because they’re doing what their masters are ordering them to do. Obedience.

Given the nature of their protest, standing now makes them look very weak and very bad, particularly to those that supported them.

The white, liberal media in their righteous panic over the Trump presidency has convinced the ignorant dindus that they have free speech protections while at work and in the workplace.

You could gather up all the professional football grab assers and their collective IQ wouldn't approach that of the common houseplant

Yep, no matter what, they have screwed the pooch.

When I called Direct TV to cancel NFL Sunday Ticket (I got it for free when I came back to Direct at the beginning of last season), the woman on the phone asked me why I was cancelling, although by her voice I could tell she already knew the answer. When I told her, she was very matter-of-fact and professional, gave me the details of the refund, and that was that. I believe the executives know they are going to take a major hit, but the damage has already been done.

“basically taking away a constitutional right to freedom of speech.”

Damn fool.

First, it’s a NATURAL right, not because someone allowed it.

Second, it’s THEIR right to fire you, bench, or even toast you and give you a raise for whatever you do. It’s right of association, as well as “speech” for the other side of your contract.

It’s only CONGRESS that has no right to do something to you, and the US government has not punished you in any way.

So get over yourself.

You babies (libs) always want it “rules for thee but not for me”; hoping your freedom of speech means no one will react to it negatively.

Yes, please have your uproar, have your ignorant and ungrateful temper tantrum, destroy the organization that feeds you, show us how incredibly stupid you really are.

I’m enjoying watching this train wreck so much more than watching grown up ingrates playing a silly game.

Why are these guys so dumb

Most have some college in their background . . . which means they were indoctrinated by libtard professors to be mindless robots that regurgitate the tripe they have been fed in school . . . but not taught to think for themselves. The citizen fans are repudiating leftist ideology on a grand scale, and it is beautiful to behold.

The vast majority of Americans have no idea how the First Amendment works.

And that is by design.

Given the nature of their protest, standing now makes them look very weak and very bad, particularly to those that supported them.

Regardless of the criticism they may take from their supporters, sometimes the smart move is to declare victory and go home. If they've got any brains, before the league forces the issue the NFLPA will come out with a statement saying that they've successfully raised awareness through the protests, and they'll respectfully stand for the anthem from now on.

Must be Gerald McCoy had a tutor do his classwork in his Government/Civics classes.

Yo Ger, You gots no first amemet write to speach when da man own your ass...

It’s called the REAL world Biff. You are being paid to perform for an audience. No where does it advocate you promoting your social cause(s) while people are paying to watch you play a football game!

When you drive your Beemer down Martin Luther King BLVD after the game, you can do any thing you like. Unless of course there are clauses in your contract that hold you to some standards of conduct.

No, it would make them look Civilized and at least a bit wiser.

“Slave Name”? Get real. They are being paid in one year what most Americans don’t make in a life time.

They are showing their ignorance with their whole “Free Speech” whining. They do NOT have a right to say and act how they want while at work without repercussions including termination.

Most ALL other Americans in a work place completely understands that.

Then there are those that just think they are not accountable for anything they say or do...

Since he feels so strongly about hating this country, he should quit playing ball, give up his citizenship in the US and move to a “better” country where he is not oppressed.

Oh yes, I would love real journalists to suggest that to him. Unfortunately, we don't have any, and the most likely outcome would be that the real journalists would lose their jobs.

Most have some college in their background . . .

Well, they were on campus. Consider the University of North Carolina's African American studies program that is currently under investigation by the NCAA for fraudulent classes.

To be fair, some did actually earn a degree...most did not.

They were there because they could either run fast, were big, or could catch the ball.
