Beyond the smoking gun: The new JFK files fill in 2 holes in the assassination story
jfkfacts.org ^ | 2017 | Jeff Morley

Posted on 10/22/2017 12:22:45 PM PDT by Beautiful_Gracious_Skies

I’ve been hearing from news reporters for major news organizations, who ask, “What’s in the new JFK files? Is there a smoking gun?”

The answer is no. There is no one piece of evidence in the 113,00 pages of JFK records scheduled to be released by October 26, 2017, that will change people’s minds...

But the new JFK files, if released in their entirety, will fill in the two key gaps in the JFK assassination story that have long been obscured by government misconduct, official secrecy, and lazy journalism.

Think of the JFK assassination story as an incomplete mosaic. The new files help complete the picture in two ways.

The new files shed light on the CIA’s use of Lee Oswald for intelligence purposes before November 22, 1963. They also illuminate the illegal actions of government officials to conceal the CIA’s manipulation of Oswald and its plot to kill Fidel Castro in late 1963....

The CIA’s Use of Oswald:

The new files strengthen the claim–long denied by the CIA and mainstream news organizations–that the agency used accused assassin Lee Oswald for intelligence purposes.

Part of the story was brought to light the JFK review board in the 1990s when they released, a complete version of one of the agency’s many pre-assassination cables on Oswald. It was prepared by Jame Angleton’s Counterintelligence Staff on October 10, 1963.

More of the story is coming in the testimony of Orest Pena, a New Orleans bar owner who said he saw Oswald in the company of a senior FBI agents in the summer of 1963. The Pena testimony was not included in the first batch of National Archives releases last week.

The newly-declassified financial records of the CIA front group, the Cuban Revolutionary Council, are also relevant, as Larry explains at The New JFK Show Blog. In his turn as a public supporter of Castro in the summer of 1963, Oswald had repeated contacts with people associated with the CRC. I will be writing more about these records in comings weeks.

Meanwhile, intelligence historian John Newman has already begun to use the new files to develop the granular knowledge of CIA covert operations and cryptonyms necessary to tell this story.

The Criminal Cover-up:

The JFK release last week includes a great deal of material about Russian defector Yuri Nosenko, who claimed to have seen Oswald’s KGB file. The veracity of Nosenko’s claims in the face of CIA interrogation is a key issue that requires deeper analysis, as Newsweek has already reported.

Key documents to come include the still-unreleased testimony of Angleton to the Church Committee on September 12, 1975.

Also important are the operational files of CIA officers hostile to JFK who were involved in assassination operations including Bill Harvey, David Phillips, and Howard Hunt.

None of these files were included in the first Archives release.

“A larger problem for that theory is Morris Childs. Operation Solo.

Our most valuable spy in the entire Cold War.

Personal friend of the Soviet leadership.

In the Kremlin with his Soviet pals when the news of the assassination hit. They were as shocked as we were, and they were as occupied in trying to guess who had done it as we were. One of the few things that we knew for certain in the days right after the killing was that the Soviets were not involved.”

Actually, Ion Mihai Pacepa covered both Morris and his brother Jack in his Disinformation book, and what he says paints a completely different picture (and in fact, he claims citing the Mitrokhin Archive, the KGB component responsible for operations in the US became suspicious of Morris, and by extension, Jack’s loyalties due to certain... holes in their backgrounds. Pacepa himself even suspects the KGB and Communist Party top levels may have already known or at least suspected their true roles since at least 1963, if not even earlier, and only let them in because they saw the disinformation potential.). It’s on page 250-4. I’ll post the full text later if anyone’s curious.

“If you look at Soviet operatives at that time, the idea that they’d use Oswall is absolutely laughable.

Look at Pacepa’s deposits from the DNC.”

If you’re implying that the DNC is trying to have Pacepa claim that the Russians were involved in the 2016 election, I’m here to tell you that that is definitely not true. As a matter of fact, he if anything suggested AGAINST Hillary winning the 2016 election and implied that she’s comparable to Nicolae Ceausceau.

“Here’s Escalante’s story from 2005:

Fabian Escalante was a supporter of Fidel Castro he worked for the country’s state security department. Later he became head of Cuba’s Counter-Intelligence Unit (1976-1982). In 1978 he agreed to provide information to the House Select Committee on Assassinations.

In 1978 President Carter arranged for a group of imprisoned exiles to be released. This included Tony Cuesta who was involved in an attack on Cuba on 29th May, 1966. A member of his team, Herminio Diaz Garcia, was killed during the raid. Cuesta, who always vowed that Castro would never take him alive, attempted suicide by setting off a grenade, which blinded him and blew off his right hand. Cuesta spent a long time in hospital as a result of his serious injuries.

Just before leaving Cuba Cuesta asked to see Escalante. Cuesta told Escalante that he had been involved in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

He also named Herminio Diaz Garcia and Eladio del Valle as being involved in the conspiracy. Cuesta asked Escalante not to make this information “public because I am returning to my family in Miami - and this could be very dangerous.”

In 1982 Escalante became a senior official in the Interior Ministry; he was considered to be Cuba’s leading authority on the history of CIA activities against Cuba. In a Cuban television documentary broadcast on November 26, 1993, Escalante named the gunmen who killed John F. Kennedy as three Chicago mobsters (Lenny Patrick, David Yaras, and Richard Cain), and two Cuban exiles (Eladio del Valle and Herminio Diaz Garcia), but said that many in the CIA and elsewhere knew what was going to happen.

In 1995, Wayne Smith, chief of the Centre for International Policy in Washington, arranged a meeting on the assassination of John F. Kennedy, in Nassau, Bahamas. Others in attendance were: Gaeton Fonzi, Dick Russell, Noel Twyman, Anthony Summers, Peter Dale Scott, Jeremy Gunn, John Judge, Andy Kolis, Peter Kornbluh, Mary and Ray LaFontaine, Jim Lesar, John Newman, Alan Rogers, Russ Swickard, Ed Sherry, and Gordon Winslow.

Some high-level Cuban officials attended the conference. This included Fabian Escalante, Carlos Lechuga, a former Cuban diplomat, and Arturo Rodriguez, a State Security official. Escalante revealed details of Cuesta’s confession. He also informed the group they had a spy in the anti-Castro community in Miami and knew about the plot to kill JFK.

Fabian Escalante is the author of The Secret War: CIA Covert Operations Against Cuba, 1959-62 (1995) and CIA Targets Fidel: The Secret Assassination Report (1996).

My Note: While Escalante claimed to have a written statement from the confessor, Cuesta, he refused to produce a letter to substantiate this claim.”

Yeah, about that, I have my suspicions of his story. Ignoring that he refused to back his claim, either Escalante is BSing us or Cuesta is BSing us, considering that a guy who is left blind from a grenade suicide bit would be incapable of firing a sniper rifle (which actually NEEDS eyes to be able to aim).

“That paragraph was about the coverup/muddying/obfuscation, not the actual op.”

Okay, my mistake.

“Also remember it is NOT LBJ. It is the entire US intel and services. Not to mention his party allies like the DNC.

Look at how many people are out of the loop in US stuff.

The DNC found 17 people in different agencies who would stay they thought the Russians colluded with Trump and we all know what a steaming pile of BS that is!

Besides, if tensions escalated with Russia, how valuable would these former Soviets be to the US government?”

Do I think the DNC is a terrible party and needs extensive reforms if not kicked out altogether? Yes. However, you’re ignoring Ion Mihai Pacepa (and for the record, considering he spoke out against Hillary Clinton and even compared him to the same guy he indirectly deposed earlier with his Red Horizons book, and he also made clear he wasn’t fond of Bernie Sanders, do you REALLY think that the DNC would give him donations?), and he makes it VERY clear that the Soviets were doing a massive disinformation campaign with the JFK assassination, and in fact, he was personally involved in that campaign. And for the record, it’s called “intelligence organizations” for a reason, the entire POINT is getting intel and making sure your enemies don’t listen in.

“If you are really interested in this I’d suggest you check out:

JFK Declassified: Tracking Oswald:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6830318/

These former US spooks talk to his Soviet handlers anonymously and they completely confirm that Oswell wasn’t even OKed to collect intel, track boats or do ANYTHING with the Soviet Union and didn’t get CLOSE to making the grade.

He tried to be an agent for the Soviet Union, and they wouldn’t touch him with a 10-foot pole.”

Yet again, I suggest you read Ion Mihai Pacepa’s book “Disinformation” as well as “Programmed to Kill”. The USSR thrives on disinformation. Do you REALLY think that they’d stop the charade?

There is some confusion since I pasted Escalante’s statement on the confession by the Cuban- Cuesta, and you reposted it here.

This footnote was my own FR personal observation:

My Note: While Escalante claimed to have a written statement from the confessor, Cuesta, he refused to produce a letter to substantiate this claim.”

And I figured, since he was blinded in 1966 from the grenade, Cuesta could not write and proofread his own confession of killing Kennedy in 1963? Since Fabian Escalante was the chief of Cuban Counter-Intel Ops. guy, he would have secured an authenticated taped or recorded confessional record as proof to his claim. Granted, Escalante was told this information in 1978 and did not reveal it until 1995.

*****Cuesta told Escalante that he had been involved in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

“He also named Herminio Diaz Garcia and Eladio del Valle as being involved in the conspiracy.....”

“......November 26, 1993, Escalante named the gunmen who killed John F. Kennedy as three Chicago mobsters (Lenny Patrick, David Yaras, and Richard Cain), and two Cuban exiles (Eladio del Valle and Herminio Diaz Garcia), but said that many in the CIA and elsewhere knew what was going to happen.....”

As to the other two accused Cubans besides the alleged confessor Cuesta;

Garcia was reportedly killed during the 1966 Monte Barreto raid in Cuba.

Del Valle per a synopsis of a 1967 (Miami) Dade County PD, Criminal Intelligence report:

One of the suspects in the killing of Eladio Del Valle on Feb 22, 1967 was Irma Collazo (aka Irma Battisti). She evaded authorities with the help of Dr. Santiago Rey Pernas. Pernas was the former Sec. of the Interior under Batista. Pernas was closely associated with Santo Trafficante Jr. and Federsbindo Bosque, a Cuban gangland figure with business ties to Norman Rothman and the Mannarino brothers. Pernas relocated to Miami and the D.R.

I am pretty sure that Castro had involvement in the JFK assassination, though. Markus Wolf certainly thought so, anyways.

I think my mom turned over about 7 or 8 cameras. My stepfather was a big time photog. Had his own developing room. It just about killed him when everything went digital and he could no longer locate developing chemicals, etc.

Of course, in Conspiracyland there’s always an excuse.

“Actually, Ion Mihai Pacepa covered both Morris and his brother Jack in his Disinformation book, and what he says paints a completely different picture”

You go ahead and believe your pet Soviet general. I’ll stick with Ronald Reagan, who awarded Morris Childs and his brother Jack the Presidential Medal of Freedom for the amazing role that they played during the Cold War. Anyone curious why Reagan did that should get John Barron’s book Operation Solo.

The one(s) called out by LVMPD officers calling in was at Alibabba.

The ones reported by witnesses were dressed as security guards and in numerous places.

The helicopter was of course in the air above LV.

So in your opinion there were shooters in Alibaba, some in the crowd dressed as security guards, and some in a helicopter?

Well, there’s been more than one “confession of involvement.”

There’s the infamous CIA officer, Howard Hunt. And David Morales, Operations officer at the JMWAVE station in Miami where he trained BayofPigs operatives. Both took credit. Some in the Agency - involved in the BoP and other anti-Castro operations grew to hate President Kennedy over lack of action to remove Castro. This intensified in the aftermath of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the spring 1963 crackdown on exile groups operating against Cuban targets from Miami. Morales was reported to have gone off on a drunken tirade regarding Kennedy’s failure to support the men of the BoP saying, “Well, we took care of that son of a bitch, didn’t we?”

Which is consistent with John Martino whose life intersected with many of the Agency’s anti-Castro activists, including Morales and Frank Sturgis. Martino stated he had been involved in a peripheral way, and that “The anti-Castro people put Oswald together was LHO was just ignorant of who was really putting him together. Oswald was to meet his contact at the Texas Theatre and they were to get him out of the country, then eliminate him. Oswald made a mistake...There was no way we could get to him. They had Ruby kill him.”

And now we have the CIA in a legal battle over the records of officer George Joannides, and has admitted to the existence of 1,100 assassination documents withheld in full. Note that Joannides = JMWAVE and these records are separate from the JFK Collection documents to be released this week.

So you believe the FBI can’t discern between a camera and a light stick? And the FBI switches evidence. Once again, the FOIA gets to the truth....

Headline: Oswald Pictures Released by FBI Photographs from Small Spy Camera Revealed after almost 15 YEARS by Earl Golz

Photographs developed from Minox spy camera film found among Lee Harvey Oswald’s personal possessions have been released by the FBI after being suppressed almost 15 years. About 25 images shot in foreign countries on two rolls from the miniature German-made camera were made available by the FBI under a Freedom of Information Act request by Alan Weberman, an independent assassination researcher in New York City......

I think I’d trust the original Dallas PD officers who inventoried the camera at the scene when they logged it as evidence. You realize there’s also several rolls of processed film in evidence that went missing from the archives.

When the Warren Commission Report (your Bible) demanded accounting of the discrepancy, it’s rather telling.

The real absurdity is when the same alleged camera surfaces in ‘an old coffee can’ in the garage two months later. That was after the calls between the FBI & the sweet housewife/landlord/CIA handler of Oswald.

http://www.whokilledjfk.net/oswald5.htm

“I don’t know why they wanted it changed, but they must have had some motive for it.” THE FBI’S REPORTED ACQUISITION OF A MINOX CAMERA FROM MRS. PAINE TWO MONTHS LATER OCCURRED AFTER NEWSMEN STARTED ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT REPORTS THAT THE FBI WAS TRYING TO PRESSURE DALLAS POLICE INTO ALTERING THEIR INVENTORY OF OSWALD’S PROPERTY. Robert Gemberling, now retired FBI agent.........

This is true. But over the years, the past document releases have brought much greater understanding and a myriad of clues to unravelling the truth, especially as it relates to the CIA’s involvement.

The evidence that indicates CIA involvement has always been only circumstantial and of course. We all know that it’s nonsensical to say that an agency as large as the CIA killed Kennedy. However that shouldn’t deter the focus away from examining the actions of individual players within the Agency. Since the CIA is highly compartmentalized and operates on a “need to know” basis it limits access to knowledge of any covert operation. Therefore, a select few would have had any knowledge about Kennedy’s assassination and that is where the focus should be directed.

“So you believe the FBI can’t discern between a camera and a light stick? “

The false dilemma, a big favorite in Conspiracyland.

The Dallas PD made the initial mistake. The Dallas PD recorded having picked up a “small German camera + black case on chain & film” in their handwritten notes - but they make no mention at all of a Minox light meter.

Unfortunately for conspiracy theorists the Dallas PD took pictures of their haul, and what they have in the picture is Paine’s Minox light meter and the empty case for his camera.

Too many motivated people. JFK for obvious reasons. Giancana/Marcello for the persecution of the mob by the brothers. If I were at the Bay of Pigs I would have wanted to kill him.

Exactly, he had a long list of motivated enemies willing to do the deed for a myriad of reasons and someone(s) provided them the opportunity.

It is probably harder to believe that Mafiosi hit-men would have taken on the task due to the risk of capture. It is more plausible to have anti-Castro Cuban assassins shooting at JFK since they have absolutely no remorse in killing a foreign leader, and are willing to take extreme risks to make Castro look culpable. There was no shortage of bravery among Cubans after the BayofPigs. This dovetails with the likes of E. Howard Hunt & others involved with the BoP (including Poppy’s deflection of suspicion on Cuban exiles in Miami alluded to in J.E.Hoover’s memo).

These guys were willing to assume risk repeatedly. They returned to assassinate Castro in Miramar in 1966 and all died or were captured. So I don’t think Escalante’s story is implausible, but there’s always the issue of the removal of evidence pointing to the actual shooters and determining the ground crew at Dealey Plaza. The Dallas PD through incompetence or collusion, failed to maintain the integrity of the crime scenes, presidential limo, and JFK corpse. The FBI, Secret Service, and Warren Commission failed to track down all the possible evidence.
