“HRC likes to walk in the woods...”
Wisconsin on opening day of deer season? A reinforced infantry division out there shooting?
I agree it is a lesson to learn.... but.... on her own property. You know, we own a ranch and after i retired and we started spending a lot of time there it took a bit to get the trespassing stopped. We have pasture with cows but also a lot of prime hunting woods. Creeks etc. I did two things... one i confiscated all tree stands, feeders i found. On my property, it became mine. And two... we had no trespassing signs already in place but i had some additional signs made that said “survivors would be prosecuted”. Everyone got a kick out of it and we treated it as a joke, sorta, but they also got the message
I agree with you
When is skunk season?
I noticed the same thing. It means the reporter needs an editor.
“I assumed the woman was hunting, too...apparently this was not the case.”
Apparently she was out rock hounding on opening day of deer season. Brilliant, Was she a Boston transplant?
Gee....don’t mention skunks!
Several days ago, here in Maine, I clicked on the light outside the front door 10:30 at night.
Under a cedar tree, I saw something black and white. That critter must have been 10 - 12 inches long. Of course, it was a skunk. I opened the door a crack and quickly closed it....the skunk ran away.
I wouldn’t go into the woods on opening day wearing a blaze orange jumpsuit, hat, and gloves.
“Im curious as to whether the guy shot her thinking she was a deer, or did he shoot at something else, not aware of what was downrange, miss, and hit her?”
That’s what I was wondering. Also, was she between him and her house, and did he know where the house was?
“Was she a Boston transplant.”

That I don’t know. Most stores around here sell orange jackets, gloves, vests, scarves, etc. I noticed many of these items are pumpkin colored or another shade of orange. They are supposed to be “Blaze” orange, i.e., bright fluorescent orange.
Still, a tragic situation.
Deer hunters have safety drilled into them during mandatory hunter safety courses, but apparently this guy didn’t pay attention.
Full story and what ended up happening after the woman’s death. Dates back to 1990.
I do a lot of hiking in the woods and I can tell you that you are not always aware whether or not you are on private property. It is not always posted as such or if there are some signs, it's easy to miss them. When you get into remote areas like Maine, it's not unusual for people to own many of acres of woodlands that they never even explore. In fact, I own a five acre plot myself and it's been years since I stepped foot on 4/5 of it. When I first bought the property, I took a walk around the perimeter and then never went much past my yard ever again.
Not making an excuse for what happened with the hunter. You should never take a shot at something without knowing what it is you are shooting at.
One time during one of my hikes, I forgot it was hunting season. I got chewed out pretty bad by a deer hunter for being out there without an orange vest. I just turned around and went back to my car. I'd rather get yelled at than shot at!
It is idiots like this moron that give hunting/ethical hunters a bad name.
By ethical hunter : I mean the animal to be shot is within 300 yards and if a shot to the vitals can not be made. The hunter should not take the shot.
It does not matter how much money was spent to hunt, money spent DOES NOT EVER EQUAL MEAT IN THE FREEZER.
Most of the time the hunter comes home empty handed (9 of 10 hunts)
I’ve taken my state’s bow hunting class and learned the same. Even if it didn’t I don’t need some instructor telling me to verify my prey. Maybe I’m just paranoid.
Shot in the chest, eh? With a blue jacket in addition to those mittens? In her own yard on clear November day.
He got the fairest trial imaginable: acquitted by a jury of his peers.
Hunting accidents in my locales have most often been caused by visitors from large metropolitan areas.
In Maine, youd better! :-)
Just like I am a troll on DU under another name I think Blue house sue is a DU troll here. Laz may agree. That said I have to say that one shouldn’t have to worry about attire on ones OWN PROPERTY.
Sorry. I referenced others but did not have the courtesy to ping them. Doing so now.
Ala High Plains Drifter, the guy should be strapped to a tree naked and slowly horse-whipped by the victim’s family members.
