In my town we had a dentist that passed out toothbrushes and dental floss.

Nowadays they should only go in the daytime and only to known neighbors if they even go at all.

Geez, that would be so annoying. It reminds me of the phase I was going through and I passed out apples. The worst!

Maybe not too bad if it wasn’t on fire in a brown paper bag.

I am going to spend all winter plotting and scheming and watching tutorials.

LOL me too ;)

Glad your onions and garlic are coming up. Hopefully the spinach will grow

I have a small, counter-sized “Mr. Stalky” vertical planter that I plant spinach lettuce kale, herbs etc. inside during the winter—I also do green onion, lettuce, and celery re-grows. I just hate to end the growing season.

"Okay, kiddies, one at a time please.   Scallions and kale for everyone!"

(The kids are going to start scheduling a "Mischief Night Two", the night after Halloween.)

I’ve never been good at it.

I think I planted too late and some things should have been in the ground.

I did that for a number of years. The first year I had some broccoli and a head of cauliflower handy so I sat out on the porch and when the kids walked up I told them to choose. The reactions were a lot more ewwww and yucck than this guy had. Then I asked as an afterthought is they might rather have some of the candy I brought out from behind the chair. Joy replaced puzzlement and consternation. All the parents were cracking up right from the get-go. In later years I used canned food like butter beans and sauerkraut to similar effect. 20 years or so ago there used to be loads of kids going around but in recent years it got down to a trickle so I stopped handing stuff out.

helped my aunt with crowd control at her house she gave out 1500 miniature candy bars in two and a half hours. her nephew who works in as a practical affects and make up artist did not have to work this week so at the last minuet he raided his old props and set up scene in his horse trailer of a dead body surrounded by body parts. the kids loved it.....most fun in years for me.

LOL I often feel that way, but even a failure is a good learning experience.

I think gardening is part experience, part science and part luck. Some crops grow better some years than others...

For ex. this year for the very first time I had the dreaded tomato horn worm, but I only had it on one plant and I learned how to stop them (hat tip Mich. Gardener). No idea why I only had one plant affected...Found FIVE of the buggers on it, but I was also able to get the plant to produce after I cut back the damage...So just depends. My squash did not do that well this year...just way it is I guess.

Do you go to the garden thread here on FR?

I lurk mostly, because I’m not much of a gardener.

I had a few bad turns healthwise so wasn’t able to do everything I needed to to get a decent harvest.

About ten years ago, did pretty good for a few years now nust down to a couple squash and tomato plants.

Also, we rent so can’t invest a lot into fancy raised beds and irrigation systems and our yard just isn’t that big and the worst of it is there aren’t enough sunny spots.

I know what you mean about some years certain crops don’t do well.

My first year, I had a few squash plants that really produced all summer. The next year it wouldn’t fruit-I think we just got a couple and there were people all over the country on various gardening forums complaining about theirnon productive squash.

I haven’t really been around the FR gardening thread in years. Last two things I remember are advice from Black Agnes about growing asparagus from seed(thanks again!) and Johnny. :( (RIP)

I miss seeing his pictures-all the different things he grew and the rogue tobacco plant.

Justadumbblonde always posted great pictures too. I can’t remember where she went.

I read, hoping I can learn from the others but I don’t dare call myself a gardener. Aside from the few squash and tomatoes its just a few little old herbs tucked into various corners in the backyard.

For several years I have been wanting to build a below-ground greenhouse, so that I can grow year round. Being in Texas, the issue is not keeping it warm, as most parts of the U.S., but keeping it cool enough in the summer. I am so close to pulling the trigger on getting it started, but still haven’t got the details worked out. I didn’t get to have a garden this year, but if I do this, there will be no weeding, no tilling, no summer heat & I will have vegetables growing during all the seasons - I wish it were finished already.

All our kids are grown and out of the house, but for 15 years or more my husband wears a gorilla suit and chases the kids that come trick or treating. Now they expect it and are disappointed when they think he may not be around. (Usually he’s hiding and waiting for the right moment.) He’s worn out 2 gorilla suits and got a new one this year & they even noticed that - one little boy asked where he could buy a costume like that. The cool thing is, each year several of the kids and the parents tell us thanks for doing our Halloween to the max for their kids. It was raining this year, so I pulled the curtains back to our picture window and decorated our den with skeletons sitting around the fireplace with the only light being candles on the mantle and a lamp with a creepy flickering light. The mantle had an old radio from the 40’s, a skull and old candlesticks. We always play creepy music outside and I have a huge flowerpot on the porch by the door that looks like a cauldron that I put a fogger & red light in, cover with skulls and sometimes cars pull up to the curb looking at the door and when they see the fog come up they drive away. LOL. A lot of the kids won’t come to the door without a parent, but they still love it. Every year, 2 hayrides make sure to come by our house so the gorilla can terrify everyone. So many screams! We have as much fun as the kids :)

Us kids got together and told each other who was giving out the best stuff.

Oh yeah. There was a house down the street that always gave away apples. I have nothing against apples, but they are not right for Halloween. The word got around quickly, and the kids decided their time was better spent elsewhere at more productive houses.

The father/husband in the comic strip “For Better or For Worse” is a dentist. Last week on Hallowe’en they were giving out toothbrushes to the kids who came trick-or-treating.

Wow you have been lurking a long time. I don’t comment too much on the thread—I do learn a lot tho. I think of myself somewhere between an advanced beginning gardener and a mater gardener LOL. As I said, I learn as much or more from my failures as my successes ;)

I know what you mean about health issues—I pulled my MCL and could not do much weeding—weeds definitely had a foothold in my garden this year.

I would recommend one of the large size Mr. Stalky-type vertical planters for your gardening...or just containers. I am moving more towards containers for tomatoes because I can change out the soil. Also, I can move them with the sun movement. My poor flower pots are taking a backseat to veggies on patio ;)

Here is a funny guy I run across on YouTube, but he does some interesting things—this one is with Basil.
