Vanity - Lookee, Lookee. Alabama Marriage, year ago!!!

Posted on 11/11/2017 9:19:54 AM PST by JLAGRAYFOX

Lookee, Lookee, thirty or forty years ago, the great state of Alabama marriage laws allowed for girls aged thirteen to sixteen could get married with parental approval. Girls of sixteen and older could marry without parent approval. Today the law states that girls sixteen to eighteen can get legally married with parental approval. Girls eighteen and older can marry without parent approval.

Knowing Alabama as well as I do, thousands of girls aged thirteen to sixteen dated with older men heavily, and got married during that time frame thirty and forty years ago!!!

So.....these young ladies accusing Judge Roy Moore could never have been abused, since all these woman accusers were of acceptable age to marry and, chose by their own free will, to date with Judge Moore, on numerous occasions, if that, in fact, actually happened.

If none of the abuse accusations ever occurred..."GAME OVER"...Ladies!!! And.....if they of their own free will, dated the Judge....Multiple times..."GAME OVER" also. Go Judge, Roy Moore!!! End of story!!!

Alabama must be where they filmed those two great movies:

Take Her - She's Nine
Close Encounters With the Third Grade

Here in Hawaii, the age of consent was 14, youngest in the nation, until I think 2001.
I was still a classroom teacher then, and worked with the local district attorney to help
the juggernaut that overturned this. It's 16, still too young in my estimation, depending on
the age differential.

Whether it was decent is a conclusion everyone will draw for themselves.

Just because something is legal doesn't mean it's moral.

Abortion.

WRT to all this Baloney about Judge Moore, I was in seventh grade when Caddis and I began our years long courtship.

He was away in college, half way across the country. My parents only allowed us to correspond by postcard. When he was home(rarely), we never were alone always chaperoned.

We married in College Station, Tx the day after he got his MS in some petroleum field. My ditzy auntie Mamie had driven me to his graduation. She gave us her 64 buick convertible. After the wedding, she flew back home.

We had never been alone together before we were married. I was alone in San Francisco while he was away enjoying himself in some southeast asian locale. Damn Lyndon Johnson and R. Milhaus Trickson. How dare the press elevate Juan McLame to such a place of high honor while damning my husband and his comrades in arms to baby killing monsters.

By the way, we have been married 51 years, there are four great grands here with us in Ennis as we prepare for our Thanksgiving celebration.

Thank you God for allowing me to have such a wonderful husband.

BTW, despite his exalted degrees, three in all, my high school education was all that was needed for us to lead a blessed life together.

Mrs Caddis

The Bonny Prince Charles, most eligible bachelor in the world at the time, started dating Diana Spencer when she was 17 and he was 30.

This is a good meme to put out there in defense of Judge Moore.

It shows that a 30 year old dating a not adult teen as acceptable, even lauded, by the entire world.

Remember the cult of personality around Princess Diana?

Re: 50s rocker Jerry Lee Lewis (Louisiana)

“Lewis has been married seven times:[32]

His first marriage, to Dorothy Barton, lasted for 20 months, from February 1952 to October 1953.[33]

His second marriage, to Jane Mitchum, was of dubious validity because it occurred 23 days before his divorce from Barton was final.

It lasted for four years, from September 1953 to October 1957.

The couple had two children: Jerry Lee Lewis Jr. (1954–1973) and Ronnie Guy Lewis (b. 1956).

His third marriage, to Myra Gale Brown, his 13-year-old first cousin once removed (his first cousin’s daughter), lasted for 13 years, from December 1957 to December 1970 (although the couple went through a second marriage ceremony because his divorce from Jane Mitchum was not complete before the first ceremony took place).

They had two children together: Steve Allen Lewis (1959–1962) and Phoebe Allen Lewis (b. 1963). ...”

Prior to the advent of birth control, women married much, much younger and for practical reasons. I have two aunts by marriage on my mother’s side who were 15 when they married. My paternal grandmother was 16 when she married my grandfather, he was widowed and mourned his first wife who died in childbirth for many years before remarrying. He was 52. They had ten children.

Comes to that, my own grandmother was married at sixteen (or fourteen, memory not exact but it was one or the other).

Today's WSJ editorial says that "The charges are disqualifying for public office if true, even if the statute of limitations has long expired.” Apart from your excellent point (which really does call the whole idea of this “scandal” into sharp question), this is a stance which would eliminate the “chief of sinners” - and in secular terms the author of about a third of the New Testament - Saint Paul from dogcatcher. I don’t find it necessary to take it seriously. There is a reason for a statute of limitations, and I actually think more than one.

First, this is essentially demanding that Judge Moore prove a negative, and who can remember and document enough of their life to defend such a charge at such a remove???

Secondly, it is noteworthy that nothing similar has been alleged, let alone proven, in forty years. Does anyone seriously suspect that Judge Moore is harassing women now, or will do so in future? What, exactly, is the benefit to society which accrues from raising this charge now? Does anyone suppose that being credulous of in judicable “she said” allegations against a conservative now will expunge the stain on the infamous blue dress???

Remember Harry Reid’s (after-the-fact admitted) bold-faced lie about Mitt Romney’s income tax?

Remember Anita Hill?

Remember Crystal Mangum and Michael Nifong?

Remember the prosecutors bringing fatuous charges against Senator Ted Stevens?

Remember the prosecutors bringing fatuous charges against Tom Delay?

ENOUGH!

In older cultures (Europe, ME, India) and much of the US in the 19 and early 20 centuries men did not marry until they were established with an income and demonstrated ability to support a family. They then sought older teen age girls to marry. A girl 17 in England could expect to marry a man in is mid 30s to early 40s.
My great, great grandfather lost his wife wen e was 55. He had 6 small children and married a girl 16, the age of his oldest child. The new couple went on to have 7 more children. One was my great grandfather.
Young men in their teens and twenties rarely married until the industrial revolution allowed younger men to have a steady, dependable income. Marriage used to be about the ability to support a family.

I was wondering about this when these allegations first surfaced. I actually wondered aloud to my husband that the age of consent may have been very low at that time, in that state. I think Loretta Lynn married as a very young teenager.

”... for girls aged thirteen to sixteen could get married with parental approval."

Thanks for mentioning this JLAGRAYFOX. It rattled the memory of a rural senior acquaintance of mine that had gotten married at 13 with parental permission.

Still happily married I might add.

That is certainly something which could stand documenting with a link if possible - and just as certainly, worth bringing before the people of Alabama. Maybe conduct a survey to find out how many Alabama voters have ancestors who married as young teens? Perhaps Moore couldn’t do profitably do that, but someone else might could . . .

End of story...means there is nothing left to say. Case closed. Of course the “end of story” only can apply to me. Everyone else is free comment pro or con, as they so desire.

Okay, but if there is nothing left to say, any comments would be more or less irrelevant.

I read somewhere that that effect was especially pronounced in Ireland, where a man didn’t marry until he inherited his father’s land. Thus, Irishmen in their twenties behaved a lot like teen-aged boys - and hence the nickname, “the fighting Irish."
