Smarter people's brains have better wiring that helps with flow of information
Daily Mail ^ | 2 December 2017 | Daniel Roth

The researchers, who examined the brains of 199 females and 110 males, found that individuals with better wiring of the anterior insula and the anterior cingulate cortex - two areas of the brain associated with the cognitive processing of task-relevant information - demonstrated better cognitive function.

The university defined intelligence as the 'general mental capability that involves the ability to reason, to think abstractly, and to learn quickly from experiences,' and consulted graph theoretical network analysis methods to draw their conclusions.

'The different topological embedding of these regions into the brain network could make it easier for smarter persons to differentiate between important and irrelevant information— which would be advantageous for many cognitive challenges,' Ulrike Basten, the lead researcher for Goethe University study, argued.

The anatomy of an individual's brain also played a role in higher intelligence, which helped increase the capacity of an individual to focus and avoid distraction.

Absolutely fascinating research. This is the type of research that needs funding - not the pseudo-science coming out of universities these days.

This kind of work is precisely the sort of thing that simply must be shut down because it leads to racist and supremacist attitudes.

Smart or not smart these people can kiss their grants goodbye: they're clearly not wired in accordance with the requisite establishment guidelines.

Wouldn’t you just love to see scans of Obama, Hillary, Pelosi brains? I’d put Trump’s brain against theirs any day! I’d be willing to keep libs around. In a collection of pet rocks.

The real question, to me, is what sort of education can actually change the brain’s connectivity. This is the test you want at the end of the school year.

Two words in the headline makes me suspicious.

1: Smarter.
2: Better.

Who is doing the measuring?

Its just like every Climate Change headline that contains “could”

You make a good point. Science has been systematically reduced to political reinforcement. Yet another thing to work on.

I wonder how much we spent to discover that having better brains means that you can think better. Somehow the premise itself is a total waste of money and time. Why do I pay taxes for this crap.

Seriously in what way will this astounding discovery ever make enough money to replace what was spent to discover it? Don’t they realize how hard it is to actually make something that is worth enough money to pay for this waste of time.

It’s like people in Academia think that me working for a living is for the purpose of them and their lifestyles. Isn’t it funny that they drive a BMW and I drive an old pickup truck.

I wish one of them someday would invent something that would actually improve things and make money! Oh well I guess it’s better than the last study on the length of rat genitalia.

/ rant

Brains are not wired. The metaphor is a failure. Computers in the 50’s were wired. Have to find another metaphor if you want to be understood.

Imagine if you could do scans on children at the beginning of a school year, and spend the year running study groups of various types of educational styles and then see what impact those styles had on brain development. The first stage to making a recognition have impact is having some metric to use for evaluation.

I think this study does have potential impact as a metric.

Interesting. Thanks for posting. Is another victim group being created to give criminals/socialists an excuse to support/fund?

Check your choices.

Yes.
Human intelligence is the principal economic asset.
Anything that can be done to improve it is going to pay off better than anything else.

The trouble is, there may not be any way to affect this within our current technology.
That is at the core of most of this worlds dissatisfactions.
The root of “inequality”.

I don’t see this as having anything to do with equality or inequality. Brain development just IS. The question is whether you can do anything that changes it. Supposedly that was what education was about before the educational community decided it was better suited for propaganda.

Who is “smarter”?

A brain surgeon or a expert craftsman who makes amazing works of art?

Betcha their brains are wired very differently

Aren’t they talking about the amount of connectivity, not left brain/right brain? Actually, I’d probably give the palm to the craftsman. Most of the pre-meds I met in college were excellent memorizers but not excellent thinkers.

Science has been systematically reduced to political reinforcement.

Exactly. The same people doing these studies will still insist that there is no racial or ethnic differences in intelligence and IQ does not actually measure intelligence.

Of course. They’re wired left. If they were wired right, they’d be conservatives like us.
