Too bad you didn't follow it up with any hard evidence to prove it - especially since it's not at all plausible or intuitively correct!
I mean, just consider: If we stopped "importing" people from extremely war-torn, crime-ridden, woefully underdeveloped countries like Haiti and Somalia - how would that impact America's Gross Domestic Product? How would it impact crime statistics? Would we have more, or fewer welfare recipients?

If they’re so desperate, then they need to do something about fixing their own country. If people feel like they can just up and leave for the US, where is the motivation to fix anything?
White Mexicans like Vincente Fox, know that the only reason their heads aren’t on pikes is because there’s the safety valve for Mexicans to leave for the US.
Force them the stay in Mexico, they may finally revolt and do something about their s-hole country.

My family was thrown out at the barrel of a gun from their previous country and once they finally did get to the USA from their sh8thole, they worked hard and their kids achieved the American Dream in 2 or 3 generations. They and their kids are/were productive taxpaying CITIZENS.
I really don’t care which sh*thole country some refugees come from. I believe in merit based, though. I’m not expert enough to design for the purpose of this post what tests or bars a merit based refugee program would contain to choose who merits a chance.
But yes, I believe a strong country can give special experts, and some low skilled refugees, a chance at the American Dream. The chance some of the low skilled refugees coming in to the country would get could be swiftly curtailed if they don’t show gratitude for their chance.
I think there’s clearly enough evidence to show we let in way too many from certain countries.
