Believe it or not he was a country boy who could do real well in the country. But he lacked some common sense and often did real stupid things like put too much black powder in a muzzle loader because he didn’t have a measure.
Hard to believe he had never been more than 35 miles away from home till he was almost 30 years old, and had never been to a cafe till the same age.

That doesn't surprise me much. Rather than listen to sage advice, some people have to touch the fire to learn that it is hot.
