Quick look at the new Bullitt Mustang
(Excerpt) Read more at youtu.be ...
Bill Hickman drove the Dodge...helliva driver....he also did other chases..French Connection...and another great chase...in The Seven Ups
Yes it was one of the best chase scenes ever. Maybe the best.
Let me try...
Beautiful SF in its flaming heterosexual days.
Jaqueline Bissett.
Very cool jazz in a city known for its very cool jazz.
Mr. Cool himself packing heat.
Set the modern standard for car chases,
Did I mention Jaqueline Bissett?
I might lose but will bet you weren't there. {;^)
Other than that it was just a small v-8 Ford, not as responsive as the Charger it was chasing.
It’s the green....I just can’t get past it.
Steve McQueen and that green fastback were so iconic for SF - and now totally alien. I miss the good old days...
(The fashionable olive green blazer I wore with black trousers once in awhile back in the day would probably cost you your lunch!)
It’s only green vehicles.
I can’t deal with them for some reason. You can take the most beautiful vehicle...paint it green and I’m out.
Everyone has their quirks when it comes to vehicles...that’s mine.
Right - brain fade here. It was a Charger. Isnt that weird? They made the Coronet with a B.B. Hemi but that indeed was a Charger in the movie
Actually, it’s British racing green, quite popular back then as was lime green.
The Mustang GT used in the movie (actually two were built) had a 390/330 V-8 with 780 Holley, headers and milled heads to boost power into the 370 horsepower range. Not even close to the 426/425 horsepower Charger but substantially lighter. They also beefed up the Mustang’s suspension with larger sway bars, subframe connectors and heavy duty shocks. The 390 CID engine used was certainly not as big as Ford’s 427 wedge or the 427 SOHC engines they used in their GT-40 at Le Mans but it wasn’t a small V-8 like their 260-289-302 small V-8 commonly used as their base engines of that time frame either. Sorry if I’m being picky!!
The body lines of the 1968 Mustang are classic. The new Mustang looks live every other car on the road.
Love to see the 1968/1969 fastback built with todays engine, suspension, brake, safety and chassis welding technology.
You are not at all being picky.
I do/did have a passing knowledge of the Mustangs used in the film and how they were beefed.
But, as you point out, the smaller v-8 was more commonly used and that is the impression most of us had.
Slightly off topic. My dad bought my mom a red Mustang convertible to drive around town (of course it had a small v-8). Safeway was approx 1.5 miles from home. Ten years later it had 2,500 miles on it.
...think there's a Canadian firm that does that
Or Kermit green nowadays...
My first new car was a Bullitt Mustang - one month before the movie came out!
A poor 24 year old with no mone got cash from insurance after my ‘66 Mustang was totalled by my roommate. A car-dealer friend replaced with a ‘67 Buick Wildcat convertible/455 cu.” engine that I couldn’t afford to put gas in.
Ford dealer in Indianapolis had the Bullitt ‘stang on his showroom floor when the ‘69’s came out and swapped me my Wildcat for it plus $100.
A month later when the movie came out I was driving the hottest car of the day......loved it, drove it in the ground over 100k mis. in 3 years, passed it on to a friend who moved 4 states away where it died and was junked. I later moved to the same city!
Would love to have this new one - but love my Porsche Cayman S too much.........the new Bullitt could never keep up with it on any road track.......
Bingo!
Clean, invigorating salt air from 3 points on the compass, moderate climate, decent sailing, nearby horse country, great restaurants (at least then), Fisherman's Wharf (for doing it at home), good wine nearby, close to Yosemite and Lake Tahoe, etc., etc.
If SF currently offered its "good old days" I would be there as fast as I could pack and relocate.
He drove the Charger and he was actually the Character in the Movie as well. He wasn’t just an anonymous Stunt Driver.
