In the hazy beginnings of 2017, the film Get Out debuted and managed to give an entire new twist to the horror genre. The lingering effects of Jordan Peeles directorial debut, which delivered a black spin on Rosemarys Baby-esque body horror, are still felt to this day. Get Out was not only nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director at the 2018 Oscars, but its lead actor Daniel Kaluuya was also nominated for Best Actor. That a genre film could defy tradition with multiple nominations horror is rarely nominated, save for prestige horror like the aforementioned Rosemarys Baby, The Exorcist, and Jonathan Demmes The Silence of the Lambshas been one the season's biggest surprises.

I will probably watch it myself to make my own judgement. That said, I do not think the crux here is that its a love letter to black people but that it is how Stan Lee and Marvel has allowed SJW BS into their movies. It was hoped that such SJW BS would stay relegated to their comics (which have boomed incredibly) but not move into their movies...alas....
Blaxsploitation is back!
Awww. Yessss
Because decades of racial pandering has done SO much
*boomed = bombed...my bad.
” Just like the Blaxploitation movies in the 70s.”
If you can find it, I highly suggest watching “Black Dynamite” with a few less PC buddies. It is a spoof of 70’s blaxploitation movies. Just about ruptured my spleen by laughing so hard
And quota nominations after the two year WHITEWASH, the Academy goes far outta its way to avoid criticism with blatant tokenism
The weirdest headline I saw was that the Blank Panther is a white supremacist movie.
I can see the correlation of pro-borders, anti-immigration, self-determination with conservatism ... but NOT white supremacist.
I always found the Black Panther to be an interesting character in the comics. He was part of the Avengers and I remember liking the character as he was a mix of confidence and mystery.
But I won’t see the movie, because I prefer the books.
I do wonder if the media will refer to the American actors playing Africans as “African-American” and wonder about what they’ve written.
Let me put it this way. This movie seems likely to attract a lot of black people. How many white people do YOU think are going to be keen to be in that audience along side them? Of even in the same movie complex on opening weekend?
I think there’s hints of the beginnings of a little Marvel fatigue, and I think it’s understandable.
The Netflix series has been on a downward trajectory, with each series earning fewer viewers than the prior series. The movies are big and loud, but they’re all starting to look and play the same. I think some movies have been good (Ant-Man, Guardians 1 and 2), but others have been disappointing (Avengers 2, Civil War, Dr. Strange, Thor 3). Despite higher ticket prices, Avengers 2’s box office performed less than Avengers 1. Every successive Spider-Man movie (Sony, Sony 2, MCU) box office has performed less than the previous. Usually, a movie genre’s popularity lasts 10 to 15 years. We’re at about a decade now, starting with Iron Man 1.
DC’s movies have been disappointments, except for Wonder Woman. Justice League was supposed to be an epic but it rolled over and played dead. There’s very little noncomic-phile enthusiasm for that series.
Oversaturation of the genre. The Marvel movies are all starting to look the same. So do the DC movies. The signs are all there for this to peter out for a while. Just a gut feeling but I think the first genuine MCU flop will be Captain Marvel - the movie almost nobody demanded.
They can send all the love letters they wish but not from my wallet.
I watched Captain America: Winter Soldier while I was on a Disney cruise with my family because it was free and I had nothing else to do. I find superhero flicks to be okay, fun and forgettable. Winter Sodier was a legit good movie with a good plot, real stakes, great pacing, good characterizations. In other words, not a good superhero movie, a good movie period. After that they went back to fun and forgettable light fare.
We’re looking forward to seeing it as well.
Just because a movie features a black lead character, and a number of blacks in the cast, does not make it PC, bad, racist, etc. I wish FReepers would be slower to damn films that feature strong black casts.
I’ve not been a big fan of the Netflix shows ... just can’t get into them. I do enjoy S.H.I.E.L.D., but this season is getting goofy. They seriously need to move away from this current storyline.
Ant-Man was great, as were the Guardians movies. Spiderman Homecoming was a perfect complement to the comics. Any before that were just ... lame. Growing up a fan of Iron Man, I still like every one of the Iron Man movies. They’re very well done. Are they all getting to big and showy? Perhaps. And that seems to be Marvel’s plan as they are getting set to let the main characters fade off into the sunset while they build up the next Avengers ... Ant Man, Wasp, Black Panther, etc. If they can’t get a good following, I agree that Marvel movies will begin to fade away as well.
I haven’t seen the DC movies ... any of them ... except for the Batman movies up through the Christian Bail movies. None since. I do want to watch WW and I like what they’ve done with Aquaman. Hopefully they’ll keep the momentum going.
Amen! This looks like it's going to be really good.
It is Black History Month so expect a ton of Black History
And liberal if you say anything for it? As for me, I will wait to see it myself to judge. A good movie is a good movie. Heck, I remember the original Alien movie. I didnt give a dam it was seen as some as a female empowering movie, I just like the friggin movie!
I completely agree that Winter Solder is probably the best MCU movie. It stands on its own as a legitimately good movie and needs no qualifier as a good “superhero” movie.
LOL! How bout Sack Lunch?
The importer/exporter?
