The U.S. trade deficit in 2017 was the highest its been since 2008, despite President Donald Trumps repeated promises to reduce the size of the deficit.
The trade deficit grew by 12.1 percent in 2017, soaring to $566 billion, the highest since the deficit hit $708.7 billion in 2008, the Department of Commerce revealed Tuesday, according to multiple reports.
The trade gap widened in December, growing 5.3 percent to $53.1 billion.
The U.S. imported numerous foreign-made goods in 2017, many of which were produced in China. The trade gap with China, a country Trump criticized repeatedly on the campaign trail for its unfair trade practices, surged to a record-breaking $375 billion.
Imports from Mexico also hit a new record high.

This is your issue. It is why you won, among some other issues as well.
This one is very important.
Dodo, US buying power is up. We are also attracting back manufacturing. Slow your roll Cocheese.
I feel like I am in “The Sixth Sense” but I just see dumb people.
He is bringing manufacturing back to this country. Those numbers will change over time. Remember we just passed the tax bill.
It’s Deep State and globalist sabotage. Did you think defeating them would be easy? Trump will soon have a loyal fed chairman. After that, he’ll have leverage with the banks. Congress also needs to pass a law enabling Trump to do things like fire disloyal federal employees and withhold federal funds from sanctuary cites and radical, far-left universities.
The trade deficit does belong to Obama. President Trump will own the 2018 and beyond. MAGA!
The only thing our President is lacking is a Republican House and Senate, oh, ..............
Let’s be fair, Obama gets credit for this.
Bwhahahahahahahaha
You made my night.
I can just see CNN or MSNBC claiming that.
You Fungi. U make me rafff.
Pretty soon you’ll be buying shirts and towels with the label, “made in USA”.
It wasn’t long ago, that EVERYTHING was made in America.
It can be once again.
Stand up for American production, Mr. President.
Nonsense. I have a trade deficit with a few grocers except one. So what?
“Stand up for American production, Mr. President.”
Name one president in your lifetime who has stood up for American production more than Trump. What do you expect him to do that he’s not already doing?
Don’t get me wrong.
I was one of Trump’s original supporters here on FR.
All I am saying, is China just set ANOTHER all-time trade surplus record, vs America.
I expect him to correct that.
However he wants to. I don’t really care how, but this is a critical issue to me, and to a lot of his voters, he needs to do something. We have been giving away the store to the Chinese (and the Chinese military) for over the entire last generation.
Trump was the first politician to really raise the issue. He won on this issue. But has done nothing yet.
That is what I want him to do.
Still cringing, still negative. Changing your name changed nothing.
Buy American.
:D
I want to buy a food processor. Got any recommendations?
And that reduces the trade deficit in what way?
Re: “Dodo, US buying power is up.”
True.
Unfortunately, the U.S. Dollar Index was down 12% in 2017.
Cheap dollars mean foreign goods cost more, which increases the trade deficit.
Cheap dollars should also increase exports, but the article doesn’t break down the numbers, so I don’t know how much exports increased (if it all) in 2017.
I found the full year 2017 trade numbers...
2017 USA Total Imports - $2.9 trillion - up 6.7%
2017 USA Total Exports - $2.33 trillion - up 5.5%
Approximately 30% - 35% of USA exports are “Services.”
Approximately 60% - 65% of USA exports are “Goods.”
USA petroleum exports hit a record high in 2017, but we still had a “petroleum gap” deficit of $96 billion.

What this manifests is any Democrat claim to a success in the stock market is due to Obama’s policies, is only due to Trump’s policies and the trade deficit will begin to subside as US manufacturing returns to normal production.
