Norman Jewison was a genius.

He managed to take an unpleasant and anti-Christian (and indeed, anti-Semitic) stage production and turn it into a joyous spectacle on film.

If you ever see the video of the theater show, it is mean-spirited and ugly.

And this particular number was treated brilliantly as he gives Elleman’s voice a chance to shine by not shying away from her non-glamourous physical appearance. Truly a beautiful job by all involved.

This was one of them.
Mockery and turning the Son of God, who was a perfect sacrifice, into just a man with faults, feelings and failures.

Jeff Fenholt later regretted ever playing that part.

I remember watching an actual Movie about the actual Jesus Christ on UP a few years ago. Jeremy Sisto played Jesus, and yes, the resurrection was shown. That would be more worth watching than Superstar.

JCS also got me interested in Christianity and all of these years I missed the subtleties some of you pointed out...but I love the music, the recognition of JC.. so this will remain one of my favorite musicals of all time. Other comments regarding race or sexual identity kind of shocked me....and embarrasses me that Conservatives would sound so racist and petty.
