It Begins: Florida Resident’s Firearms, Ammunition Confiscated Under Gun Control Law

The guns and ammunition of a 56-year-old Lighthouse Point, Florida, resident were confiscated by police in what is reportedly the first such seizure under gun control laws signed by Gov. Rick Scott (R) last week. The Orlando Sentinel reports that “four firearms and 267 rounds of ammunition” were taken from the man, and he was “taken to a hospital for involuntary psychiatric treatment.”

The seized firearms were listed as “a Ruger LCP .380 pistol, an M2 Mauser .45 pistol, a Charter Arms .357 mag snub nose revolver and a Mossberg 500 12-gauge shotgun.”

The paper notes that “the civil ruling removing his access to guns and ammunition was granted under … new legislation — which permits confiscating guns from people who have not been committed but are deemed a potential risk to themselves or others, according to the order signed by Broward’s Chief Judge Jack Tuter.”

Guns should be a moot issue in this case, because this poor soul should be kept somewhere safe for himself and society.

People who are demonstrably too crazy or too evil to trust with guns, should not walk among us.

In my youth, I grew up in a southern state where there were a lot of crazy folks, and I came later in life to grasp that the majority of them were Paranoid Schizophonics. When I go back these days to visit....the number of ‘affected’ folks seems less but my brother (who lives there) says it’s mostly because of medication usage.

His take on it is that for mass shootings...it’s all 99-percent male. If you go and talk just plain killings (knife, hammer, bat, pistol, etc)...he thinks that about a quarter of the folks are women, and their issue is being Paranoid Schizophrenics who went off their medication.

The one thing I’ve noticed (I live in Germany)...is that the Germans offer everyone a license to have or purchase weapons. But in the middle of the process....some doctor has to sign off that the guy/gal isn’t on medication or a potential threat of a Paranoid Schizophrenic type. That tends to stop these folks. The other German solution is that they won’t hesitate to throw you into some mental ward if you present a threat to anyone.

So, where do we go from here?

We have about 5% of the voluntary/involuntary psych beds available in this country per capita that we had in the 1950s.

How Stalinist was it then?

Need more info.

"Police were called after the man turned off the main electrical breakers to the condo building in Lighthouse Point, court records show. The South Florida Sun Sentinel is not identifying the man because of his medical condition.

The man told officers he “was being targeted and burglarized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and a neighbor who lives in [his] building,” the judge wrote in his order. “[He] could not describe the neighbor but stated that the neighbor [can] ‘shape shift, he can change heights and I’m not sure where he comes from’ and ‘to be honest, he looks like Osama Bin Laden.’”

He also told officers that he had to turn off the electrical breakers because “they are electrocuting me through my legs.”

Officers said they saw weapons in his home after they were called to check on his welfare. They also found evidence he had “a voluminous amount of notes containing numerous references to former President Barack Obama, that he was killed in the 1980s but came back and now murders children to place their spirits into [the man’s] head, is a member of [al-Qaida], and is [the man’s] enemy,” the judge wrote in his order."

So... how many Freepers want this guy handling guns in your neighborhood?

Well, not this time, perhaps...

This can of worms should never have been opened.

Great News, this will certainly prevent Swatting, ... Oh, wait, ...

Won't prevent plane crashes and hangnails either, but if it takes guns out of a lunatics hands I'm ok with it.

Oh please. Can you not see the potential here?

Let’s pull medical records on registered Republicans and Independents. Oh, lookee here! Docctor’s notes say patient seems to be under some “stress”.

Remember, the government has unfettered access to all of your medical records now.

It won’t take much to convince Judge Libtard that you must be disarmed.

You think that won’t happen? It’s the first thing a President Kamala Harris would do. Sooner or later, we’ll have another complete jerk in the White House.

Stop deluding yourself. You’re dangerous.

Since Obamacare, our medical records are not private.

The oligarchs’ records are closely guarded, just not yours.

I agree that something should be done about people who pose dangers, but the problem with laws like this and the Baker Act is that they can be abused. I recently saw a show regarding psychiatrist Holli Bodner, whose abuse of the system ultimately ended in a man's death. Using access she had to certain government databases in a professional capacity, she misidentified the neighbor she was feuding with, Jean Paul Villar, as a criminal with a similar name, John Villar, and fearing for her safety (a fear she built up in her own mind that had no basis in fact), proceeded to use her contacts within the court system to have him involuntarily committed under the Baker Act. She had never seen him in a professional capacity. Nobody questioned her. He was recovering from back surgery when sheriff's deputies arrested him and handled him roughly. The back surgery was needed because he was injured on the job. Well, because of the rough handling by the deputies, his worker's comp stopped paying because they couldn't be sure his condition wasn't a result of his arrest. They had to pack up and move. His young daughter watched him die of a blood clot. Tragic story. This woman destroyed this family by abusing the law. There were not enough checks and balances.

We just need to watch the oft mentioned “slippery slope”

And there you have it. I am sure this case was cherry-picked for an early seizure under the new law. So many are wasting their powder on what is unarguably a no-brainer. But as you say, there is much potential for a slippery slope now that this has started.

Oh, great. Moron Scott allowed POLICE to petition for GVROs. Shouldn’t petitions be from people who actually more intimately know the person? Police cannot know everybody that well!

You don’t have a problem with the police, who have a vested interest in keeping things calm, petitioning judges for GVROs, instead of people who know the person more intimately, like friends, spouse, family members?

Hush now - nobody wants to know if he really is nuts or acting nuts - they gots their talking points and they's stickin' to dem....calls for waiting for some actual facts to come out are just wrong and irrelevant....;-}

If we could actually take proactive action against the mentally ill, we could solve a lot of problems but since the Dems emptied all the institutions into the streets and made it so if one is able to communicate they don't want no stinking help, their wish overrides any sort of common sense, we have seen a serious increase in certain forms of mass violence.....it is more of a mental illness issue than a gun issue and that needs to be seriously brought into the conversation.

“Four, a veritable arsenal. /sarc”

But all that ammo ! I mean that is a TON of ammo to carry around. When I had my FN Five-seveN it was about 200 rounds max in my pockets.

Wait, that’s his _total_ ?

Loopholes galore in that section. The person is required to “document” his sanity after confiscation . Only the wealthy will be able afford self defense soon.
