What’s in a name: Gender-neutral baby names are on the rise

NEW YORK (AP) — Whether Royal, Charlie or Salem, Skyler, Justice or Oakley, unisex names for babies are on the rise among parents more willing than ever to embrace the possibility of gender fluidity in their children and attempt to head off sexism on their behalf.

“We’re definitely seeing more conversation today around the distinction of a truly gender-neutral name,” said Linda Murray, global editor-in-chief of BabyCenter.com. “This generation is truly interested in gender neutral names.”

The Social Security Administration puts out a top 10 list of popular baby names every year based on its registrations, but it also keeps track of names on the rise in its top 1,000. Name-watchers said crossovers and more neutral names haven’t overtaken the top spots but are more heavily represented in the broader ranking, especially among millennial parents.

Pop culture and honoring family or religious history are important in baby naming, as is the cool factor. But more names are being used for either sex regardless of which gender they were originally associated with, and neutral naming has become a flashpoint for debate.

“We chose a gender-neutral name, Riley, for my daughter,” said Lori Kinkler, a psychologist in San Antonio, Texas. “We knew her sex, but gender is fluid and yet to be determined. Of all the difficulties faced by those who live beyond, or across, the binary, we didn’t want name-changing to be one of them. ... I like that she feels she has options and knows she’ll be accepted by us no matter what.” Riley is 3.

If somebody wants a gender-neutral name as a contingency for a kid who may want to jump on the trans-sexuality bandwagon, I’d suggest “Confused”.

To Kevin Nealon’s dismay, as he probed Pat’s gender identity, “her” paramour was named “Chris.”

This gives weight to the idea that psychologists enter that field mainly to identify what is seriously mentally wrong with them.

Because babies are an accessory and you need to be recognized for how open-minded you are with your accessorizing. /s

Very practical! if the kid decides he doesn’t want his appendage, he can lop it off, let his hair grow, and he doesn’t have to get his name changed in dozens of places.
Very convenient.

Are dating services going unisex too?

There is one law, however, that is a big problem. Selective service registration is for boys only. If he goes to a dickchopper, does he still have to register at the SS? If a girl “transitions” to a boy at age 19, is she retroactively guilty of not having registered with SS?

Insanity.

"Royall" was popular in American Colonial times.

Probably not so much after the Revolution...

However, the theater at UVM is named after Royall Tyler, a law professor in its early years, and one of, it not the first, American playwright.

So many people who claim there are no differences in the genders are really hung up on differences in genders.

The headline wouldn’t exist if differences didn’t matter to the writer.

I think that I identified the core of the problem.

There may be a Boomerang Effect to all these attempts at de-sexing people. The children of the next decade may have names like “Brick Dickerson or Velvet Rose”.

“Gender fluidity”= “serious mental problems”
Pure and simple.
No ifs, ands, or Obamaholes about it.

I’m familiar with it because I went to UVM but did not know the story behind that name. Thanks.
