If you dont smoke and you find yourself walking behind someone who does, it can be unpleasant. Now a New York City Councilman wants to do something about it.
My bill is very simple: no smoking and walking on New York City sidewalks, said Queens Councilman Peter Koo (Dist. 20).
His bill would make it a misdemeanor to walk while smoking, likely punishable by a fine of $50.
Smokers, already banned from lighting up in public parks among many other places in the city, werent thrilled at the idea.

Don’t give ‘them’ any ideas
How about submitting a law that
pedestrians hold their breath until
the smoker walks by. This I’d just,
NUTS...
It’s not a part of America anymore.
Just write it off.
I guess New Yorkers aren’t very coordinated.
“If you dont smoke and you find yourself walking behind someone who does, it can be unpleasant”
Walking past a drunk, foul smelling,
homeless person can be unpleasant also.
God forbid, he’s a smoker too.
Liberals: Giving you more freedom every day.
Im going to start cheering when the normal people lynch all the crazies in power.
It amazes me that these LIB legislators would see NOTHING wrong with smoking pot ANYWHERE yet ANYONE that touches a cigarette is declared a lepar!!!!!
You seem to like anarchy over law and order.
If traitors are hung rather than lynched, according to the principles of the Declaration of Independence with respect to “the right of the people to alter or abolish” a “government that has become destructive of (the) ends” of “effect(ing the) safety and happiness” of the people, then that would indeed be a good day.
Agreed.
This proposed law would be pretty
tough to enforce, since a LEO would
have to actually witness the offender,
walking, and smoking. We’re I a smoker,
hell bent on breaking this ordinance,
I would only need to stop walking if I
we’re smoking when I spotted a cop.
Can you imagine NYC’s court rooms tied up
trying to prove someone was walking while
puffing on a cigarette? The city would
have to define what walking is/was.
What if a smoker has a “roll your
own cigarette that looks like a
joint?
Fuch off fight-baiter.
Vehicles put out far more noxious fumes.

‘Love’ it when you see sidewalk dining in a city - buses idling at a light, cars, animals, etc etc and the snowflakes turn up their collective noses and go ‘eew’ when someone walks by with a cigarette...
Remember the campaign R Limbaugh tried to start by having’US’ thank all the smokers because of the new tax on cigs was going to PAY FOR EVERYONE’S HEALTH CARE.
Of course ‘we’ were told to STFU when we asked what if people just stop smoking?
Same as cities etc and their speed and red light cameras...if people slow down and stop for red lights the cameras become dust collectors with a ‘collection’ department with ‘nothing to do’.
Heard the other day that MD was going to raise the text/drive fine to 500 bucks.
The legislation OPPOSED it because most people couldn’t afford it....DUH MAYBE if you don’t text & drive etal you wouldn’t have to worry about the fine..
Guess that is to simple a solution...
Next they guardians of society will make a law against passing gas. People will have to pop Beano pills to avoid getting a ticket.
Sorry. Have to clean up my post:
Next those guardians of society will make a law against passing gas. People will have to pop Beano pills to avoid getting a ticket.
To be honest, I never see anyone smoking in Manhattan anymore. In the 70s, people openly smoked pot in the streets.
I’m just surprised they didn’t outlaw this earlier (under Nanny Bloomberg).
I am not a smoker (I used to be), and yes walking behind someone who is smoking “can” be unpleasant.
But “illegal”? No.
There are a ton of crude, unpleasant and even some “offensive” (like profanity) behaviors some uncaring folks do in public. To follow the slippery slope of the idea in the “no smoking while walking” bill we would descend down to the point of making illegal anything anyone complains about (as long as what they complain about is politically incorrect).
The same people who want to legalize marijuana want to ban cigarettes. Cognitive Dissonance.
NYC's got a million problems, but air quality is not one of them. There's almost no industry in the city or nearby and the ocean air is fine. Just stay away from the busses.
If you call an in-context mention of the Founding Fathers “baiting”, then that says more about you than me. Their chief focus was on character. Thanks for admitting you’re a liberal, in that case.
I’m an ex-smoker. Got to where I couldn’t
climb a flight of steps without almost
passing out. I guess I was one of those
courteous smokers though, and would abide
by one’s wishes that I not smoke in their
presence, especially in enclosed spaces.
But trying to stop people from smoking
outside is just plain stupid. I envision
hundreds smokers standing to shoulder,
puffing away. (maybe even right next to
one of NYC’s fine outdoor eating establish-
ments).
