I'm feeling like hearing some interesting music that I've never heard before, so I thought I'd start a thread on FReeper's favorite underrated bands. Post several good examples of their music and why you feel they're underrated. Should be fun.

Not really a "band" per se, but no one is more underrated. Most people know him for only one song, when there are so many GREAT ones. RIP, Warren.

The Verve were awesome. A Northern Soul may be one of the best albums of the 1990s. If Richard Ashcroft hadn’t used the reunion as a vehicle to get his solo career back on track, maybe they’d still be delivering.

I will enjoy this thread, but I really wanna do one on worst overrated bands next!

Sounds fun, these threads always work best starting on a Friday afternoon and running through the weekend, maybe you can do it next Friday.

One of the best live bands I’ve ever seen, which is surprising to me since they’re sort of soft pop, not generally my taste. But they were very hard working and were determined to give their fans a great show, three encores.

XTC was terrific. “The Mayor of Simpleton” is one of the catchiest tunes ever.

Question: Underrated by whom?

I think Social Distortion is underrated by many “regular” rock and roll fans because they were labeled a “punk band”. When I listen to them what I hear is well-played, straight-up, rock-n-roll.

Underrated in your own personal estimation. I love Social D. I'd be happy to play several, I've got my favorites.

Pretty much anything that existed prior to 1991 or so, when music went off the rails. Having said this, however, I will point out a group of recent vintage that is worthy of attention - Mouse On The Keys. If you don't mind music that is strictly music - no words - with that music being a bit jazz/prog-ish, then you aren't likely to hear a better band from the millennial generation. Definitely a keyboard dominated group, but the drummer is an absolute beast.

Loved Zebra..."Who's behind the door"...great song.

My underrated band is King's X...rocking 3-man band with Beatle-esque harmonies.

Since I grew up on Jazz & Fusion back in the late 70s and early 80s, I'll mention a couple along those lines.

Brand X (with Phil Collins on drums)
Algon (Where an Ordinary Cup of Drinking Chocolate Costs £8,000,000,000)
(yes, they were apparently Monty Python fans - one of their albums had sleeve notes written by Michael Palin)

The Dixie Dregs (Southern Fried Fusion)
Refried Funky Chicken
