Jewish-American soldiers didn’t just fight Nazis in WWII — they endured anti-Semitism

GI Jews: Jewish Americans in World War II” begins as many Holocaust documentaries do, with a history of the rise of Hitler and Nazism in Germany mixed with what is now standard archival footage of Brownshirts and Kristallnacht. Throw in interviews with some Jewish celebrities — in this case, Carl Reiner and his friend Mel Brooks wearing his old Army jacket — and it has all the workings of a typical PBS documentary.

But the film, which premieres April 11, on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, quickly takes an unexpected turn. Jewish-American soldiers, the viewer learns, weren’t only fighting Nazis during the war — they had to battle the anti-Semitic prejudice of many of their fellow soldiers.

All told, some 550,000 Jews served in World War II. A few had experienced anti-Semitism at home already in the form of “Gentiles Only” signs, for example, which were found at some public facilities across the country.

I have my doubts. Reminds me of when an Irish-American radio and TV pundit claimed that his father saw "no Irish need apply" signs in the mid-twentieth century. Pure blarney.

It was very definitely a real thing:

"No Irish Need Apply" as were the "Gentiles Only" signs.
Glad the U.S. has moved past that. Here is one man's memoir of growing past anti-Jewish bigotry, helped by his service in the U.S. Army:
‘Gentiles Only’: Boyhood Memories of an Ordinary Bigotry

Here we go again with the silly 'erase' accusation. Someday folks like you are going to be very disappointed...

Has anyone ever reminded you that demeaning another freeper personally is not appreciated here? Civil people find a way to say what they want to say without sneering at other freepers. His point of view has valid aspects, as does yours. This doesn't have to be a black-and-white, "either/or" matter—it can be "both/and", as in "our soldiers' heroism and loyalty to one another overcame even the prejudices of their backgrounds."

If one wants one's point of view to convince others, it's better to use a fact-based or objective tone rather than irritable anger and condescension.

This FREEPER should never have posted this. He also attacked everyone who disagreed with him and accused us of being both angry and guilty of wanting to 'erase history'.

Most anyone else would have backed off by now. He persisted to throw insults over things like where I was born for some reason. He also is a sloppy researcher.

Stay out of it. it is done as far as I am concerned.

American and Allied war policy in Europe had nothing to do with Jews.

Jews are descended from the tribe of Judah which is the tribe that King David and Jesus descended from.

The Jewish Virtual Library's article Who Is a Jew? says:

In common speech, the word "Jew" is used to refer to all of the physical and spiritual descendants of Jacob/Israel, as well as to the patriarchs Abraham and Isaac and their wives, and the word "Judaism" is used to refer to their beliefs.
With regard to your belief that some tribes are excluded from being known as Jews, the site continues:
Technically, this usage is inaccurate, just as it is technically inaccurate to use the word "Indian" to refer to the original inhabitants of the Americas. However, this technically inaccurate usage is common both within the Jewish community and outside of it...
It's worth going to the link and reading the full explanation there. Jewish identity/ethnicity is derived from Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, who predated the division of the land into two kingdoms.

I don’t see any phone numbers in the ads with “no Irish need apply” statements, so they’re probably not from the 20th century.

This FREEPER should never have posted this.

This is Jim Robinson's house and not yours. If Mr. Robinson decides it has no place here, he will have it removed.

It is also proper ettiequte to address the Freeper you are talking about.

Jonah Goldberg is not Jewish.

His Wikipedia page says he is. His father was Jewish, his mother Episcopalian, but he was raised Jewish. Please spare me the maternal bloodlines discussion, as even rabbis disagree.

Quite frankly I read the article as showign positives about America -- let's be blunt there was anti-semitism in the USA before WWII - but it was eliminated after the 1940s - by the people of the USA themselves... the greatest generation may have grown up with some prejudice to hispanics, Italians, Jews, blacks etc. but they overcame it - that's another aspect that made them great, growing beyond the circumstances you were raised in

Relief! A sensible and even-handed post. I am disgusted by the name-calling, jeering and palpable rage on this thread. It's an overreaction and fails to impress.

Leftist Jews are leftists. All leftists are whiny.

Just as a matter of clarification on this contentious thread, allow me to post that Orthodox Jews in America are often registered Republicans and supported Trump in the last presidential election.

Here's an excellent FrontPage article that cites the uncomfortable underlying dynamic to Jewish liberalism and majority Democrat voting: while a majority of Jews who favor conservative positions attend weekly religious services, only 11% of American Jews attend weekly services, as contrasted with 40% of non-Jewish Americans.

THE ONE NUMBER THAT SHOWS WHY JEWS REALLY VOTE LIBERAL

Despite these numbers, it is rude and inaccurate to speak of "the Jews" as a leftist monolith. Observant Jews have more in common with Evangelical Christians, who honor the Old Testament and learn the Biblican Jewish history leading up to Jesus' arrival, than they do with Jewish secular liberals. It still chafes my butt that it was the Anti-Defamation League, which was founded to combat anti-Semitism, that led the fight in Alabama 20 years ago to remove the Ten Commandments from the courthouse, setting a poisonous precedent.

What a loss! Not one young person can read the great Yiddish writers like Shalom Aleichem or the playwrights of the Yiddish theater.

Such an expressive dialect, spoken by many of the parents of my friends growing up in a half-Jewish neighborhood near DC/Baltimore. My college roommate from New York was also fluent.

A couple of years ago I went to see the comedy tour that originated in Philadelphia, Old Jews Telling Jokes, and was appalled at the frequent use of the "f-bomb" word instead of the wonderfully more expressive Yiddish word schtupping. Otherwise, it was hilarious, even the jokes ostensibly offensive to Christianity. The only person not laughing at those was my Jewish friend whom I went to the show with; I was in hysterics the whole time. This is one "offensive" joke from the show that I recall:

Mr. Goldstein, who manufactured nails, wanted to retired to Florida, so he turned his business over to his sons. A year later, on the way from the airport when he came back up to visit them, he saw a big billboard that showed Jesus on the cross with the caption, "For quality nails, get Goldstein's!"

He was outraged. As soon as he saw his sons, he yelled at them, "Vat in de vorld ist vrong vit you? I never vant to see such terrible advertising again!"

A year later, as he was returning for his visit to his sons, he passed the billboard again. This time, Jesus lay crumpled in a heap at the foot of the cross. The caption read, "Should have used Goldstein's Nails."

My poor Jewish seatmate looked like she wanted to fall through the floor! Everyone who knows me knows I love the Lord Jesus; but I couldn't help but laugh. I told her, "Don't worry; we don't blow things up over what is obviously a joke."

I don’t see any phone numbers in the ads with “no Irish need apply” statements, so they’re probably not from the 20th century.

I'd give you the phone number of my 99-year-old Irish aunt in the nursing home, but it would upset her. You'll have to take my word for it.

I'm old enough to remember casual use of anti-Catholic and anti-Irish slang perjoratives up until the 70s, and our Methodist congregation was frequently regaled with anti-Catholic (including Irish) derogatory comments as part of our weekly sermon. Yet half of our extended family was Irish Catholic.

So I can't tell you when the last sign came down, but it wouldn't surprise me if it persisted until WW2 when military service erased many former ethnic barriers. Last I checked, WW2 was in the middle of the 20th century.

I should have clarified that I was not directlng that remark to you, but rather to other posts on this thread that have painted with a broad brush.

It’s a good joke! I remember that show although I never saw it. I remember my Jewish boss going to see one of Jackie Mason’s shows and sitting through it stonefaced. In the first row, yet. Jackie said to her: “you hate me, don’t you?” Then, of course, Jackie went into his routine about how goys loved him and Jews hated him because he was “too Jewish.” Jackie was hilarious about gentile life styles as well.

What people don’t understand (or perhaps they do!) is that Trump’s style is peculiarly NYC-Jewish. His cadences, his linguistics, all recall a certain street smart Jewish style. Why not? Most of the people he associated with in his long career were Jews. One of the reasons I was drawn to him is that he reminded me so much of what I love about my fellow New Yorkers: they’re funny.
