NEED INPUT- anyone in Houston area

Posted on 04/09/2018 12:54:08 PM PDT by terart

Hi all this is my first time posting a main thread so please excuse me if I do this wrong...

My daughter is getting married and moving to Houston area for husbands job on West Alabama Street. We have never been to Texas and know nothing about it but we want to get help guiding her to good areas to live. You guys (gals) were the first place I thought of for help and wisdom.

She is looking for a townhouse or small home to rent for right now and I would want her to be in a safe but economical area. Would really love your input and wisdom ...she is my first leaving the nest and now moving across the country. Normal concerns for her safety and welfare are present in our house right now so please be kind :)

If anyone has any suggestions for orthodontist office's she can apply to as an assistant that would be awesome also! Thanks so much!!

Like living in a dog’s mouth heat

Sugar Land or Katy.

Even in nice townhouse/apartment communities in the Galleria area (which is where her hubby will be working), it is dangerous and scary, at night.

In SL or Katy areas, much safer.

HAR.com is a great source for what’s for sale...search by map for either to buy or to rent. My daughter the real estate agent in the family uses this almost exclusively... Look just north of Westheimer near Bering and Augusta...tons of condos reasonably priced. Rentals too...good area and close to W Alabama.

Don’t listen to advice from people who lived there 20 years ago. These hoods can decline fast. I lived on Wilcrest near BriarFoest from 1999 to 2008. When I moved in it was very yuppie, trendy place to live. By the time I left in 2008 was dodging the gunfire from Katrina refugees.
So be sure to get up to date references.

As a lifelong Texan born and bread, my advice is this: Stay out of Houston if you can.

Due to all the liberals and non-working welfare scum and illegals it has become a modern day cesspool. Sure you find some good people here and there, but then again it’s not uncommon to find a beautiful flower in the middle of a pile of manure either.

If she is moving to Texas, move out to the Central Texas (the Hill Country (the area between Austin and San Antonio). Lots of high tech Fortune 500 employers to choose from and a quiet peace of life too boot.

Houston would not be my first choice.

*** “They should have a grand adventure” ***

My 10 years in New Orleans summed up in a single statement ...

The majority of Katrina Refugees went to Houston, I think that the climate in Houston is a little better (not “as” muggy in the Summer as New Orleans) but New Orleans is or has a more Small Town feel, Houston is a Flat Full Out Big City.

Strayed a bit off topic ... it happens, there are things I miss about New Orleans and much to Love about Texas, I have never lived in Houston but have worked there often (still do)
I would pick a place that you could drive West or North in bad weather and in good times have easy access to Galveston. (Sugarland?) or a place that you could drive East (Pearland?... definite easy access to Galveston)

“coming from Virginia Beach area”

Never been, but it seems like it would be a nice place.
