Clean up San Francisco’s streets, tourist industry pleads
SF Chronicle ^ | April 17, 2018 | Heather Knight

As president of S.F. Travel, the city’s visitors bureau, Joe D’Alessandro’s job is to promote San Francisco. You’d think he’d be hyping the city’s gorgeous vistas, top-notch restaurants and glorious museums.

Sure, San Francisco has great facets worthy of postcards and travel books, but it also has a worsening underbelly that D’Alessandro says he can no longer gloss over.

People injecting themselves with drugs in broad daylight, their dirty needles and other garbage strewn on the sidewalks. Tent camps. Human feces. The threatening behavior of some people who appear either mentally ill or high. Petty theft.

I was also shocked by the number of small businesses that have shut down; there’s lots of former vacant stores and restaurants everywhere. It’s a shame.

Durning the first dot-com boom, downtown rents went ballistic - and a lot of small businesses were driven out of business and storefronts replaced by internet company offices. After the dot-com bust, economic conditions in the city were never again conducive for a small business revival. Now, with the homeless explosion, even the big chains find it hard to do business downtown.

There is a reason why when you come to San Francisco looking for interesting independent shopping and dining experiences, you end up buying at Ross and eating at Carl's Jr. :)

As my former CEO when I worked downtown used to say: "San Francisco is the most beautiful city in the world...from ten feet above the ground on up."

You know a city is in trouble when “there’s an app for that” means there’s a poop-map-app.

What I remember when I moved to the Bay Area in the mid-1980s was how nice it was to take a cable car down Powell Street and hear the street musicians on every corner playing jazz.

That's been a long gone tradition.

To say anything is wrong with San Francisco is racist, sexist, bigoted and homophobic!

You know your city is a shirthole when the city hires people to go out and measure the shirt on the sidewalks.

“How deep is it on Main?”

“People are using stilts, that’s how deep it is.”

If it was any workplace you would be “required” to wear a bio-hazard suit by OHSA!

Just look at the board of Supervisors and you’ll see that nothing will change.

I suspect the Board of Supervisors in SFR is so far gone they’re more likely to start dreaming up new taxes to compensate for the tourist and hotel tax revenue hit the city now known as “Shake Bake and Shit” will take.

Is Joe in anyway related to Nancy? What are the odds that they are? Look up Miss Lube Rack’s lineage. You will find the answer there.

The place cannot be cleaned up without running the homeless out of town.

Which will eventually happen.

“They needed to hear it”

There’s nothing they can do about it. It’s City/County policy.

Seattle would be as bad as San Francisco if it were not for the rain.

Vigilance committees will be the eventual answer.
