the whole fore of the ship lies buried in the sand, while the stern stands 65 feet above the bottom.

The Type XXI was the first true submarine in that it could operated for long periods underwater; a shark instead of a dolphin. It was the archetype of all subsequent post-WW II subs.

A missing German submarine said to have taken the defeated Nazi leadership to South America has been discovered after being lost at sea for nearly 73 years. Those guys probably are lacking in vitamin D you think?

Denmarks Sea War Museum, which found the submarine, said there was no evidence that it was escaping with Nazi leaders or loot. I would be interested in how they came to this conclusion. Maybe this statement is a way to discourage potential looters.

A good read focusing on German submarine warfare early in WWII is ‘Operation Drumbeat’. The U.S. was totally unprepared for submarine warfare and a handful of German subs wreaked havoc up and down the east coast of the U.S. Shipments of oil were halted completely at one point due to the Germans sinking so many tankers.

Whoops! So I guess it didn’t take Nazi leaders and vast hidden wealth to South America after all. Too bad, it was a good story....

Only 122 meters down.
Max safe depth was 225 meters, crush depth 340.
Sounds like a full speed dive with bowplanes jammed.
Could have just gotten stuck in the mud: crew may have survived for 68 hours before oxygen ran out, maybe longer.

It was a sophisticated submarine and the model upon which all modern DE boats are based.
The design was copied by all modern navies in the 40’s and 50’s.
