Where sports gambling is legal, state-by-state

By a 6-3 margin, the U.S. Supreme Court has struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, which paves the way for legalized nationwide sports gambling. States can now decide on their own if they want to offer gambling within their borders.

But which states will offer gambling, and when? That’s a trickier question. Even in the best-case scenario, it’ll still be several weeks before you can make legal bets – and that’s in states where gambling bills have already passed through the appropriate state legislatures. If your state hasn’t even started considering the possibility of legalized gambling, it could be awhile.

Here’s the current rundown of gambling legality by state. If your state isn’t listed, assume gambling is a no-go for now.

(Note: this list is a work-in-progress, and will be updated as we learn more from each state. Meantime, if you have information on a state’s progress toward legalized gambling, let us know so we can provide the most updated information possible.)

Looks like NJ, MS, WV, DE and PA will get the jump start on offering sports wagering. I live in one of the few states that still bars all forms of casino gambling, VA. Although with MD allowing casino including a MGM operation on the MD side of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge on the Beltway VA might eventually cave in as more and more money gets sucked out of the state.

It’s been a few years since I’ve been to Virginia but I think it may be one of the few states with a state-controlled liquor store system too.

North Carolina has unregulated gambling because it is illegal. But you still see Sweepstakes stores in Rockingham county and video poker in gas stations.

I don’t think it’s legal in CA but can’t you just do it online? Or is that only horses?

That is correct. Can buy beer and wine at the supermarket but anything harder have to go to the state ABC store.

The Cherokee casino at the NC side of the SMoky Mountains must make buffo money because it is the only legal place in a couple of hundred mile radius.
