"I can’t get hired because of my throat tattoo"
The New York Post ^ | Alex Green

Posted on 05/21/2018 1:25:08 PM PDT by Simon Green

A job hunter claims he has been unfairly discriminated against after he was rejected by dozens of employers over his enormous neck tattoo.

Joe Parsons, 21, got the $330 six-inch throbbing red heart with turquoise angel wings in memory of his late grandfather while he worked in a factory.

But he claims that, while he has no problem getting around 30 interviews, he has never managed to get a job thanks to his huge inking.

He has tried attending interviews wearing high-necked shirts but the tips of the wings still peek out above the collar line.

Parsons, from Manchester, England, insists he doesn’t regret getting the extreme body art but wishes potential bosses could see past it.

He said: “Before I got the tattoo people thought I was a happy, confident person. Now it feels like people think I’m full of my self and that I don’t give a damn.”

“That’s just not who I am. I’m just a normal person and all I want is a decent job.”

“There’s definitely a stigma attached which there shouldn’t be. I do think it’s a form of discrimination.”

“It’s not down to the skills I have and in every interview they haven’t given me a good reason. Now I feel like I’ve got ‘don’t hire me’ written all over my neck.”

Tats like that are repulsive. I wouldn’t hire someone who showed such lousy judgement either

that would put him at the head of the line at my local Starbucks... ahead of the green haired, purple haired, and unknowable gendered baristas.. and I’m not making that up.

They actually are all friendly and polite and quite intelligent... other than being fashion impaired & common sense challenged

I never had any interest in getting tattoos. When I was growing up, everyone I knew who had a tattoo had gotten them against their will in the late 1930s and 1940s in Europe, survivors of the Holocaust.

I was thinking maybe it is more than the neck tattoo. The filthy shirt would be a start.

Perhaps he could get a job in a tattoo parlor. Or as an actor -— movie producers are always looking for people who’ll do anything for money. And I hear Stormy needs an understudy.

Similar to male job candidates of my generation with long shaggy hair. At least we could cut our hair before the interview.

I attended a computer school in 1967. Half of the students wore sandals, sported long hair, caps with peace signs or anti-Vietnam slogans and wore all the other current anti-establishment accessories. The week before graduation we were sent out on interviews and of a sudden, everyone was wearing suits and were neatly trimmed. Reality 101.

Nothing says “I’m a dickhead” like a tattoo on the throat...

Reminds me of what the flight attendant said when we landed: “Deplane...Deplane”.

Sorry, I misunderstood.

In that case, I’d recommend the Marines. They’ve gone PC as well, but they aren’t as bad as the Army yet.

Excellent suggestion, at least short term, Dermablend can hide the tat. Use it until you can afford and finish the laser fix.

“I do think it’s a form of discrimination.”

Um, yes, exactly. Our decisions are all an act of discriminating. Radios have discriminator circuits, else they’d play all stations mixed together. ‘Discriminating taste’ used to be a compliment.

One meaning of discriminate is ‘to use good judgement’ (Merriam-Webster).

So unfair dude. Like I have these three really cool snakes rising up from my chest to my neck, one is blue symbolizing water and one is red symbolizing blood, and one is yellow like the car I am gonna buy one day, and one is playing cards and one is smoking the biggest joint you ever saw and one snake is kind of having sex with the other snake, and I can’t believe how many job interviews they look right at my chest, man. Like haven’t you ever seen boobs with writhing snakes coming up out of them before? People are soooo judgmental man.
