If Ancestry.com and our family’s folklore can be believed, my father’s people are kin to the Robert the Bruce through marriage.
Our family
came down from the hills and fought the Battle of Preston (1648)on the side of the Jacobites.
They lost and those who were not killed or hanged outright was put on prison ships and sailed to america as indentured servants. They landed in Virginia and bought off their freedom and headed to Tennessee.
To this day our family has a virulent hatred for all thing royalty or authority or general.
Jon Cryer’s ancestor who came from Scotland to America as an indentured servant, is a true tale told on “WHo Do You Think You Are?”
The parallels are downright eerie. People have had similar life stories.
There was a considerable amount of time between Scotch-Irish indentured servants being transported to Virginia and the existence of Tennessee, which was split off from the state of North Carolina in 1796. There were settlers there illegally according to the British in the Watauga Settlement during the Revolutionary War, but it was North Carolina at that time.
