The photos I saw are reminiscent of the Pompeii plaster bodies. Drudge has a pic up of children laying dead next to an adult covered in ash. Tragic.

I think we are at an early point in the understanding of volcanos, hot spots and differing eruptions even at the same location. For instance, Toba, Hawaii locations, Yellowstone, and others thought to be hot spots have had very different types of eruptions. Hawaii rarely has Rhyolitic explosions but they are rare. Yellowstone acts as a shield volcano erupting blankets of basaltic lava. Why?.. the interior plumbing changes. There are some good ideas but they are incomplete.
