Why Phil Mickleson should apologize then withdraw from the U.S. Open
ESPN.com ^ | Ian O'Connor

Posted on 06/16/2018 5:25:51 PM PDT by Hebrews 11:6

I'm sorry.

Those are the first two words Phil Mickelson should say publicly Sunday morning after a fitful night of sleep.

I withdraw.

Those are the next words Mickelson should say on his way out of the U.S. Open and into a better and brighter tomorrow.

Mickelson made a mockery of his sport's national championship on his 48th birthday, and he should now do the honorable thing and remove himself from the tournament.

He hit his moving ball out of frustration on the 13th green at Shinnecock Hills, and then told a counterfeit tale about his intent. Mickelson said he took a strategic whack at his rolling putt as it headed downhill to accept the two-stroke penalty rather than risk playing the ball conventionally and taking a score more damaging than the 10 he posted on the par 4.

45-2 was invoked properly. 1-2, disqualification, was not, but should be.

You should go back and read 1-2, EXCEPTION 1.

And what other rule do you think applies? (Ignoring your typical rudeness).

You hired on to do online PR for a golfer now that your old social media gig played out?

It’s an “integrity of the game” issue. Another way of looking at it is that Phil, at 48, is more than old enough to have known better; but it’s his birthday, see, and he wants the spotlight instead of that new generation you and I favor.

“45-2 was invoked properly. 1-2, disqualification, was not, but should be.”

Dude, if 45-2 is invoked you CANNOT INVOKE 1-2!

First questions I ask myself when I see a critical commentary like this emanating from ESPN is, “What are the politics of the target? Are they the wrong ones”?

I’d love to argue about Phil and the USGA all evening, but I have a Dodger broadcast to watch. Good evening.

Come on, you have to do better than that with Texas Gator if you want him to yell at you as loud as he did me up in post 25. You just got all caps, normal font.

As for normal FR courtesy, I’d normally ping a poster when I’m talking about him/her, but TG has asked me to not do courtesy pings, and I’m complying with the request.

"..His was a flagrant violation that essentially is unprecedented in golf’s history; as the author said, he made a mockery of the game. He didn’t “play by the rules,” he intentionally broke the rule.."

Horseshit. ESPN is a mockery.
You and those FOX Sports jaggovs act like he peed in the cup or something. The controlling organization, who know far more about golf than a buncha jokers on some internet forum, are good with the way it was handled. Their money, their tourney.

The loudest whining I've heard is from a buncha drama queen "commentators". Haven't heard much complaining from the other players who would be actually affected by this.

Best I can tell he had a little fun with an already bad situation. Nobody is hurt. Nobody's out any money with antics from a guy that far out of the running. And how much has Phil done for the game over his life?

So hey, lighten up, Francis.. d;^)

USGA had to apologize in 2004 and now on 2018 about US Open Shinnecock conditions.

Much ado about nothing in the grand scheme of things. So what? Pampered false idols and celebrities and their worshipping coterie that make millions off of them. So what?

Seems most are saying it's a few holes that are the big concern. And from what I've seen I can see how it would be a real PITA and costly to some. But everyone is playing the same course even with it's changes over the course of a day.
Like Berger and Finau. They got to go out in the more favorable morning conditions today and scored well. Tomorrow they'll be a lot later getting out.

Overall, it's good to see a tourney where they're scoring near par instead of those ridiculously low scores from some tourneys. But OTOH, they're all playing the same course at those as well.

If nothing else it's been grand entertainment! d:^)

As it was in 2004 when he finished second.

Yes it was impossible then too, but he was fourteen years younger and managed to be tied for the lead through seventy-one holes. Phil is the modern-day Sam Snead, he will never win The Open*. Is a man, a professional golfer, a failure because he did not do so? I don't think so. Most of the professional golfers wold give their left arm to win one major; Phil has five. Sorry, I just like the guy. He was always a good contrast to Woods.

*: He really blew it in 2006 at Winged Foot, when he had the lead on the 72nd tee, and needed only a par to win. Instead he double-bogeyed and lost.
