  • Valspar Championship Leaderboard [Tiger Woods just one stroke off the lead]

    03/09/2018 12:10:46 PM PST · by zeestephen · 59 replies ^ | 09 March 2018
Tiger Woods is -4 under par after two rounds. The golf course is near Sarasota, FL. More than half the field is still on the course, so the standings will continue to change for several more hours. Most of the Top Ten pro golfers took this week off, so the competition is not as strong as it will be at the Masters, which is played the first week in April. Still, golf is ALWAYS more interesting when Tiger is playing well.

Some of the defining shots on the PGA Tour this year were hit from the tee and fairway, from the bunkers and behind trees, and even from the driving range. Two of them effectively clinched a first major. One of them introduced another young star. One way to look back on 2017 is through every club in the bag. The shots weren’t necessarily the best, but they helped shape the year.• • •DRIVER: Moments after Dustin Johnson made a birdie putt to force a sudden-death playoff at the Northern Trust, he effectively ended it with one swing . I regularly watch PGA golf tournaments. The President's Cup is a U.S. golf tournament organized by the PGA (Professional Golf Association) in 1994. The tournament pits a U.S. team against an international team drawn from players around the world. Each year it has an honorary chairman which is always a former or sitting U.S. President or a foreign leader (depending on which team last held the tournament cup). This year President Trump was the honorary chairman (Obama held the title twice - 2009 and 2013). This year's President's Cup tournament was won by the American team. PGA tournaments are usually...

Tiger Woods, who had been known to have the painkillers Vicodin and Xanax in his system when he was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence in Jupiter on Memorial Day, also had Dilaudid, Ambien and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) -- the active principle of cannabis -- in his system that night, according to an report.

---SNIP-- The weekend's festivities also offer a reminder of the complications surrounding the promise from Trump's lawyers that he would not use the presidency to boost his businesses. Trump has retained ownership of his real estate and branding empire - including the Virginia golf course - despite criticism from Democrats and ethics experts that he stood to personally profit from his public duties. In this case, it's unclear whether Trump's business is getting a cut of the ticket revenue. But the business, and the Trump brand more broadly, certainly stands to gain positive publicity.

Arnold Palmer, a seven-time major winner who brought golf to the masses and became the most beloved figure in the game, died Sunday, a source close to the family confirmed to Golfweek. He was 87. Reaction poured in from “Arnie’s Army” of admirers in the world of golf. “We loved him with a mythic American joy,” said Palmer biographer James Dodson. “He represented everything that is great about golf. The friendship, the fellowship, the laughter, the impossibility of golf, the sudden rapture moment that brings you back, a moment that you never forget, that’s Arnold Palmer in spades. He’s the...

A “Brave New World": Commissioners of sports leagues are just as infected as the leaders of media, business, government, higher education and the other pillars of our society After five decades, the World Golf Championship will move next year from the National Doral golf course in Miami, Florida to a golf course in Mexico City. Since the Doral course is owned by the certain GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, this decision smacks of political correctness. At least most objective observers would surmise that politics played a role in this decision; however, such a motive was denied by PGA Commissioner Tim...

Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump is responding to the PGA moving the 2017 World Golf Championship to Mexico instead of holding it at Trump Doral in Miami. “They move the World Golf Championships from Miami to Mexico City,” Trump commented. “They moved the PGA Tour, moved the World Golf Championships from Miami, where they’re furious to Mexico City.” “If I become your president, this stuff is all going to stop,” Trump added. He went on to criticize the U.S. economy for being taken advantage of by Mexico.

A three-time major winner is turning into a major headache for the PGA Tour. In a memorandum filed with the New York State Supreme Court on Tuesday, Vijay Singh accused Tour officials of subjecting him to "absurd" and "unfair" treatment by ignoring the use of deer antler spray by five other professional golfers playing on the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour and then lying to the public by "characterizing Singh as a cheater who caught a break." ... Singh's lawyer, Peter Ginsberg, claimed that the Tour's legal strategy attempts to rewrite their rules to cover their own tracks. ......

The PGA Tour has been going to Doral, Florida, for 55 straight years. From 1962 until 2006, it visited for the Doral Open, and then in 2007, it began hosting the WGC-Cadillac Championship, which continued until this past year. Fifty-five straight years of PGA Tour golf in Doral. Well, we might have seen professional golf there for the last time -- at least in the immediate future -- when Adam Scott defeated Rory McIlroy and others at Trump National in March. That's because the PGA Tour has decided to pull one of its marquee events out of the course near...

"I got in the golf business, started working at the PGA Village, got a phone call and started working up at Trump National in Bedminster, New Jersey." It was there, in 2006, that the owner of the course, American celebrity entrepreneur Donald Trump, spurred Herman to try again at a professional career. "At Trump I was an assistant pro, tournament ops, things like that," Herman recalled. "I got into a nice conversation with Donald, Mr. Trump, one day. The Professional Golf Association of America canceled the 2015 Grand Slam competition for this year’s major champions. In March the PGA struck a deal with Donald Trump to play the tournament in October at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Citing controversial comments made by Trump, the PGA announced a withdrawal from the agreement in July. Now, two months later, the PGA canceled the Grand Slam entirely, claiming they could not provide a venue in time to meet the “highest standards” of the association. Sporting News reported that this year’s 36-hole exhibition included 2015 major tournament winners...

The PGA is canceling its annual Grand Slam of Golf tournament this year following a disagreement with presidential contender Donald Trump. The event was slated to be held in October at the GOP front-runner's Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles. But the PGA decided in July to move the tournament after Trump made controversial statements about illegal immigration. On Thursday, the PGA said they were unable to find another venue in time.
