About 466 million years ago, a large asteroid about 150 kilometers (93 miles) across was hit by a smaller asteroid about a tenth the size in the Solar System. The resultant debris is responsible for a third of all the 50,000 known meteorites on Earth, known as L chondrites. Although collision is not really a crime, there is reason to think the Russians caused this. Mueller is all over it.

Getting smacked with stuff from space is one consequence of being a very large gravity well.

Of course, being a very large gravity well also led to life on this ball of dirt...so I’ll take the good with the bad, thank you very much.

Now that life has the ability to track, and shortly (by geological measurements of time) will have the ability to either shoot them down or move them out of the path of this ball of dirt.

Does it matter that, the ‘Science Alert’ story about a theoretical event that may/may not have happened 466 billion years ago, was written over a year ago? Has the Alert been cancelled or are we still at risk?

In that artist's interpretation, physics are totally ignored. The "impactor" has suffered not a trace of any effect -- much less reciprocal damage.

Whatever happened to "equal and opposite"...?

And the "10X" difference in mass is ignored, as well...

Are there no editors with brains left on this planet?

"hey also traced some of the samples back to Vesta, the brightest and one of the biggest asteroids in the asteroid belt, which they say also experienced its own collision over a billion years ago."

Now that is science. Not the waffling tripe of 'Climate change may cause beer bellies on men to expand twice their size in 50 years'
