Never short on ideas for things to tax, lawmakers in New Jersey are considering a tax on tap water.

The proposal is being floated by State Sen. Bob Smith D-Middlesex, who is trying to say it's not actually a tax but a 'user fee'.

"It is a user fee based on volume," Smith told Fox 5's Chasing New Jersey.

I’ve been working on my wife for years regarding moving out of this cess pool and was at least have some understanding that in 10 years (give or take) if I can get a job in our Florida division she would go. Only Florida. She wants the ability to come back to NJ on a whim and there are a million cheap flights a day from Orlando. So God willing I will eventually end up there. But NJ will likely take a page out of Illinois book and create a tax on home sales to punish those of us who try to flee so it will cost us a pretty penny to get out. But it will be worth it.

lol—I tried sharing all of the information about our finances with my wife.

I handed her a five page Excel spreadsheet with _everything_ on it she could possibly want to know in the event I croaked.

Her response—that is too complicated. I don’t want to deal with it.

Hey—she has the info. I can rest in peace. :-)

I rented a house in Michigan that had a well, but was on a city sewer system. They actually metered the well to figure out the sewage charges.

MLG&W in Memphis taxes water usage. I believe it is the state sales tax.

O’Malley was gonna run with Warren.
She could do a rain dance and O’Malley would tax it.

How about a $.10 tax per word on every word a politician utters in front of media cameras or reporters, and a $.10 tax per word for each piece of legislation, assesed against the legislature’s authors of the legislation and those who voted for it.

Governor Whats-his-name of the great state of NJ better remember the phrase "Florio-free in '93" which was used to get rid not only of another democrat governor, but the whole assembly. While I'll be the first to acknowledge that NJ voters are STOOPID, they'll briefly wake up and react when pushed too suddenly.

Florio proposed a rise in tolls and also starting a tax on toilet paper among other things. The response was epic. It concluded with the election of Christie Todd Whitman. Well, anyway; that was Jersey's version of a "conservative" for what that's worth.

Do they have a “flush tax” or a “rain tax” or a “chicken tax” yet? MD’s had them for years, along with other mind-blowing taxes.

Taxing water is worse than a poll tax.

Water fees should be strictly used for water procurement and/or improvement of water facilities.

It should be illegal to fund any non-water project from water fees, including from surpluses built up from water fees.

The Dems in Texas tried taxing water from private wells. That went over like a lead balloon. There are a lot of private wells in rural Texas.

LOL! Can’t say you didn’t try. I divorced my one and only husband back in ‘79. I had to learn the hard way of dealing with a budget, while raising two sons. No way would I ever rely on anyone ever again when it comes to money. The only thing I’ve done is to put both of my sons on my checking account as co-owners. That way they can have access to it if I become incapacitated or die. I was co-owner on my sister’s checking and savings accounts, and when she passed, it made things a whole lot easier when settling her final debts. She owned nothing either, and had no Will. She’d already paid for her burial site years ago. The only thing I had to do was pay for her cremation and any other charges, and then apply for letters of administration the following year in order to file her last tax returns.
