Too Bad Self-Defense Class Doesn’t Teach Real Self-Defense
Bearing Aems ^ | 6 Aug, 2018 | Tom Knighton

Once upon a time, it seemed as though women were encouraged to go through self-defense training. These classes were useful to a point, teaching women various kinds of avoidance tactics like not walking across a college campus at night all by their lonesome. But they were probably best known for teaching women how to fight back.

The classes seem to be falling out of favor as some segments of the population think it’s more useful to “teach men not to rape” than to teach women to protect themselves from the dirtbags that haven’t already learned that lesson by the time they’re old enough to understand what the word “rape” means.

They’re not completely gone, however. There’s one that just wrapped up on Sunday in Savannah.

The Rape Crisis Center of the Coastal Empire held a back to school self-defense class on Sunday. The two-hour “Safer U” class was held at First Presbyterian Church of Savannah and taught by a certified and experienced Krav Maga instructor. Participants learned verbal and physical techniques that can be used by anyone, regardless of your physical condition.

Now, I’m all for women learning how to fight back. We know from numerous examples that women who fight back are in a far better position than women who don’t...….

At least with a firearm, they could pull the weapon and put a real stop to the attack. But no. Far too many people seem to think that women aren’t capable of defending themselves with a gun.

What do you think? Are these classes sufficient? Or are they ignoring a key defensive tool that many women should consider using to protect themselves?

Most guns are locked in a safe. I have included all except the one I carry. It places us at risk not having options placed around the house.

If all schools required boxing, tae kwon do (or other similar art) and wrestling or other ground fighting, we’d have almost no violence.

You’re at risk more if the ladies do not know how to use them...correction, if the ladies fear them...they don’t really need to know how to use them... point and shoot is good enough..but they should not fear taking the action.

Even if you have zero training, it is better to be armed than not.

Do not travel in dangerous areas.
Even if not in a dangerous area one must be armed with a weapon. Become proficient with that weapon, very proficient. Adopt the attitude that you will do all possible to avoid confrontation. Adopt the attitude if lethal confrontation is unavoidable use ever skill you have to kill that which wished to harm you. If your state laws do not give you this right, move!

Self defense must stress the FACT that your gonna get hurt, sweetie....so quit fearing the hurt and hurt your attacker any way you can.

That is sot on. Some call it mind set.

It’s mind set because it’s true.

I lived it.

Those "segments of the population" may be the dumbest beings with opposable thumbs that ever lived.

Yes, you have to decide to survive whether the encounter happens slowly or in an instant.

Good on you.

For one thing, I’m not gonna travel in an unsafe zone...it just won’t happen.

leave that up to the rich twits that believe a resort in cancun is safe. And it may very well be...if your hubby ain’t rich enough,...

I taught my wife about the importance of situational awareness, the inadequacy of a 30 foot distance and we did enough practice that she can put round after round into a 9” paper plate at 25’ via point and shoot.

do they try teaching men in prison not to rape or would that be discriminatory against homosexual tendencies?

I have taken weapon classes when I signed up for CCW and am a member of a range club. I also take Krav Maga a more practical form of self-defense system that has roots in boxing, ju jitsu and taekwondo.

I am a 5’4” 125 lbs 58yr old lady and educating myself on how to handle weapons and learning how to use my body as a weapon is very empowering. It takes more than buying a weapon and learning how to accurately hit the target. You also need to learn how to fight if the criminal tries to take it away from you. A lot to consider when you pull that trigger.

If a weapon is not accessible, any form of marital arts or form of self defense is always helpful. No guarantees of course since the criminal may be better trained than you but we have the element of surprise. So training regularly definitely helps build the mind set which translates to muscle memory.

We learn to train in defense/offense against a knife, long gun, pistol, stick attack. Again no guarantees of 100% survival BUT definitely gives us a chance to survive an attack.

Getting hurt is part of the territory and I have my share of injuries. However, when you train with people who have the same warrior mind set, you learn to wear your bruises and injuries like a badge of honor.
