Well, we did it. We took my Spanish 12ga shotgun with the 27.5" barrel and cut it off. Now, it has a 19" barrel and the end has been filed and finished and it is ready to go. The intended purpose is for home defense, or in a still rare case, if some group of people are causing a problem/rioting out in society as a secondary weapon. In some literary circles, such is called a "Coach Gun".
It appears some characters in history over 100 years ago determined that a cut down shotgun would be an effective weapon a close ranges when only 1-2 shots were needed to take care of a criminal who didn't know when to run. To all of us who know guns, if faced with a double-barreled 12ga at close range, and upon being informed it has 00 Buck in it, one tends to find a way to de-escalate that disagreement or run like hell. Without getting into all of the legalities and exceptions, suffice it to say that the barrel must be 18" or longer (1/8" under is a felony) and the overall length if with buttstock is 26" (Mine fits both parameters).
No long shots here. But, in the case of a home invasion or someone trying to carjack you and you can get your hands on it, it is the perfect weapon. No night sights needed. Other than that, I can see little use for it.
I used to carry an 18” Winchester Defender in a cab top carrier in my F-250. The shotgun fit fairly tightly between the cloth covered carrier and the roof. Two velcro strips kept it secure. They also kept the gun from contact with the metal.
Almost no one ever noticed it. For some reason people just don’t look that way.
“If it has a BUTTSTOCK on it, it cant be short than an overall length of 26. Make sure you give accurate information here.”
Nope. No buttstock, just a birds-head pistol grip. Total length, 26.375”, with a bbl of 14”. It is a cool gun. And LEGAL.
From what I understand, the 18” barrel length does not apply to a hand grip shotgun.
I believe I am going to get the same effect. That will be fine. And, my mule is your mule’s brother.
My 12ga 00 Buck only has 9 pellets.
Brilliant!
I learnt that in
Metal shop,back in the day.
The rule of thumb is 1" of pattern for each yard of range. You have about 4 yards. Your pattern should be between 4-5 inches across.
The patterns above were fired with a full choke and 1 1/8 ounces of #8 shot.
>>From where I’m laying in bed and point at the door is about 12-14’. Will that work for me?
I don’t know. People think that a 18.5” shotgun will “fill a hallway” with buckshot. That is just not true. You’ll get a pattern of about 4 inches at that distance. You are using an unwieldy weapon in a close space where you might still be in bed. Furthermore, it has no sights. I gave up the shotgun for my bedside gun the first time I ever went and patterned it at bedroom distances.
>>Not very.
My point exactly.
You could always get a Serbu but you need a license to get it.
The KSG is an option and also the TS-12.
I like the KSG and would like to find a
TS-12 to look at before I buy one.
Gonna have to get out and test it. Will wait for a day when I feel real good. lol.
My mosseburg 500 is carrying 3 rounds #4 buckshot then 2 rounds 00 buckshot. If bad guys have already entered the house, racking the pump tells them where you are. Just the thunder and say goodbye azzhole is whats in my bedroom.
>>Perfect for those .33in pellets, all 15 of them at 1200fps.
15 00 balls?? Is that a 3 1/2” shell?
I am still not sure if racking the slide is a good idea or not. First of all, I would not count on the sound turning the criminal into jelly. It might make him quietly leave tho.
I once jerked a door open, flipped on an outside light and stuck a cocked and chambered Browning Hi-Power right against a burglar’s forehead. He was trying to break into a cabin and did not know it was occupied.
It did not even phase him. He told me his car was in the ditch and he was looking for a telephone. I had heard him trying to remove the battery from an RV parked right next to the cabin.
It turned out he really was in the ditch. The deputy who arrested him later stopped by and told me he was pretty sure he was trying to steal a battery as the one on his car was dead.
I got one of those a few years ago for three something.
Federal 3in mag.
...>> But the sound of a pump shotgun being racked has an even better effect. <<
If you can endure the smell of fresh excrement...
When my wife and I traveled before carry permits were common,we always traveled with an 870 in the trunk.
I took it out and had it next to the nightstand in the second story motel room with a full tube and an empty chamber.
At 3:00 in the morning, someone kicked the door open by the second chain latch stopped it.
I grabbed the shotgun and racked it with the familiar, instantly recognizable clack, clack sounding loudly.
A female voice yelled,” Don’t shoot. Don’t shoot. We be leavin. We be leavin.”
And did they ever. Running down the stairs was a woman and her two felonious friends.
My nephew is a policeman and he told me they try to do the same thing if possible with a shotgun when they first confront a problem.
That price increase is a pretty good stack of buckadingdongs, and is nothing to sneezeadingdongdoodle at. :-)
Federal Power-shok 3in magnum...00 buck. Muzzle velocity 1210fps.
