Cowboys have lowest Week One local rating in nine years (NFL)
NBC Sports ^ | 9/13/2018 | Mike Florio

America’s Team may still be America’s Team, but America’s Team isn’t drawing the same kind of eyeballs in their home market.

Via Barry Horn, formerly of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys generated a Week One rating of 28.2 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for their road game at Carolina. That’s the lowest number since the Cowboys produced a 25.2 in 2009.

It's now getting harder to ignore that fans are walking away, whatever spin they choose to try to put on it.

Many of these fans are lost for good. Like giving up anything, the early period is difficult but, once folks have found other enjoyable things to replace football such as hiking or doing thinks with family or a new hobby, they are unlikely to revert back to watching. Personally I have gotten into professional rugby with season tickets to the Glendale (Colorado) Raptors.

There will be two entirely new competitors to the NFL in the next year or so.

Then things will get interesting.

I still maintain that it has nothing to do with the kneeling protests, etc..

There is NOTHING that can compare to the watching the game on big screen in your own home...no tickets, no lines, no traffic, no weather, and it's absolutely free. Super Slo-mo replays 10 different ways. In stereo.

But that's not the only reason, either.

Fantasy League football is another reason there's nobody in the seats. No fan loyalty.

Remember back when football was a thing America loved? It was back in those days when the players loved America.

The NFL had its best attendance year in 2015, then a precipitous fall in ratings and attendance which corresponded exactly with the kneelers taking the field. We have had big srceen TVs and HD for over a decade. I rest my case.

Maybe it’s competition from soccer and women’s basketball? (Ha,ha)

The broadcasters will soon start putting pressure on the NFL to do something as ad rates start to decline. They don’t like paying big bucks for weakening programming.

For two people to attend an NFL game, and have a good time, it cost about $250-$300.

A decade ago that big screen TV was $2500. Today, costs $400.

a decade ago there was no 'Fan Duel'.

Protests may not be helping in PR relations, but..."It's the economy, stupid" works here I think. ;)

And it's the DROP IN TV RATINGS which the article is talking about.

You can't explain how attendance suddenly dropped of in 2016. YOU CAN'T IGNORE THAT. Apparently statistics and analysis are not your strong suits.

I come here to get INFORMED INTELLIGENT OPINION. As such, yours is not. But keep at it, you may one day get a clue!

Did you even read the article? This isn’t about people going to the game...this is about sitting in your chair at home on your big screen with super slow mo. It’s about TV numbers, not game attendance, which is not down in Dallas. Dallas is still sold out. This article is pointing out the VIEWERSHIP is down.

It’s about kneeling and other things: the penalties and the slowing of the game. It’s about the players, their thuggery. It’s about the NFL reactions to the kneeling and to CTE.

If YOUR theory were correct, attendance would be down and viewship would be up. Both are down.

Do you have friends? Have you spoken to them? I have mine. Many refuse to watch the NFL. Why? Kneeling. Of course I’m a 31 year military vet and most of my friends are vets. They are patriots. But I’ve got other friends that aren’t vets that even though they still watch, they no longer fly their team flag outside their house because of the kneeling. That has nothing to do with their TV.

Part of the problem may be that the Cowboy’s aren’t that good this year.

The ratings don't come from anybody admitting anything. Nielson has boxes connected to TVs which show what channel is on.

PC concerning the football injuries, plus soccer mom mania also play a part.
