The book Younger Next Year takes it further, into 45 minutes to an hour high intensity two days, low intensity two days and strength training two days, weekly. Im 73 and feel better than when I was 50. I ride a bike about 100 miles per week and still work full time. Follow the book. Best thing I ever did. Ive been at it for over 3 years now. Never going back!
Thx.
I had the same problem with my knees and ankles pounding on the treadmill, so I bought a spinner bike on amazon. Problem solved. (And you can watch TV while you workout. It’s got a cup holder, and the remote is velcroed to the handlebar.)
Maybe.
Awesome response. Almost spit out my water. I have a little bit of a different liquid S.H.I.T workout though. It involves high intensity training with 12 oz weights. As many as I can do in 5 minutes!!!!
The thing I found fascinating about the video was the claim that intense exercise (whatever the right formula of time and rest) could reverse the aging process and that it somehow affects muscles all over the body by the chemicals released (the way sprinters are toned without lifting).
His wife passed away 6 months ago so he’s newly alone.
Thanks RoosterRedux. I need something for the winter.
well that’s not so good...:(
Haven’t had a chance to see it yet, but what I’m reading here rings true. I am also a runner and I start every race at a dead run, then chill for several minutes and sprint again for about 3o seconds, etc. I have the wrong muscle twitch to be a good long distance runner, but when I do it this way, I come in faster and less tired.
There are places you can go to have your VO2 max analyzed. A trainer can also give you a general idea, but not as precise.
Yes, HIT has been around a long time. I still haven’t seen the video.
The video was interesting, and a few years old now..
I guess the big thing it had in it that most articles etc on it don’t is the woman actually used it for i forget how many weeks, and while she did see fat loss, and VO2max improvements.. she also had her mitochondria compared and tested before and after as well, and the article does a good job of explaining what they are and why better functioning mitochondria is better...
I know its not NEW.. but I think the research around its affect on mitochondria is realatively new ~ 5 years or so.
I watched the video. Very informative and helpful. I’m starting high intensity interval training today!
Prepare to be shocked.
I would love to be shocked!
I did my first routine today at an indoor track. I sprinted as fast as I could for 30 seconds, followed by 4.5 minutes of walking slowly — and repeated that three times — total 10 minutes.
It recommended 20 seconds of intense exercise followed by 10 seconds rest.
It was miserable beyond belief.
The 30 seconds at full blast followed by a cool down until breath recovery is light years better.
As to being shocked, I have been on this new program about 2 weeks. I am shocked at the changes in my brain chemistry (on a raging high) and in my fitness level. Re: my fitness, I did my usual Sunday bike ride on the local trail today and felt significantly stronger. That said, since today was supposed to be a day of rest, I didn't push too hard (a little over an hour at an average HR of 137).
Tomorrow is another HIIT day.
BTW, my weight is down and so is my BP.
What did you think of your first HIIT workout?
Marking
LOL!! We used to sprint to happy hour, in college, have a couple of rounds, then run back to campus/apt.
GREAT workout :)
