Part of the booty (so to speak) of sacking a city or raiding any other settled area were the captives, who were basically enslaved. The Linear B inscriptions of Mycenaean Greece appear to have been mostly used for bookkeeping and keeping track of taxes and whatnot. The Trojan Women of the ancient play title were referred to "women of Asia", and wound up working their fingers off making flax (and doing other hard work) for whatever remained of their lives.
